Played in a SPA tourney this weekend and due to weather, they were trying decrease playing time for games. They also wanted to get all the games in. They started using a 2 and 1 count. It made it a hitters game. You could walk in two pitches or you could strike out in two pitches. Normally with a 0-0 count, you as a batter could be more selective and as a pitcher you could throw more junk. Get a 1-1 count, pitcher could throw junk. Not with a 2-1 count. Get that first strike in, you need to be close on the second. Only takes two balls to walk. As a batter you would look for the first good pitch. There were a good number of K's due to people fouling out.
95% of all the games were played. It was just a quick as a five inning game and you got in all seven innings. Not a sermon, just a thought.
I respectfully disagree, the scenario you described made it a "pitchers" game, not a "hitters" game. Sounds more like assembly line softball......
We had a similar situation a another SPA tournament in Valley, Al. All games were rained out on Friday so Saturday we played 5 inning games with a 1-1 count without a foul. Several fouled out.
I don't know what I would done differently.
Btw, be careful retrieving hr balls, you might get hit. ;)
I'm in favor of the 1-1 count. Last month at the Vegas tournament I don't remember anyone swinging at the first pitch. Why? The wind was blowing and the chances of a walk were in the batters favor. If you really think about it most hitters with a 0-0 count rarely swing at the first pitch. So it's a waste of time. It's almost like an automatic take sign for every hitter on the first pitch.
Most other associations play with a 1-1 count and you definitely get more innings in. We don't run out HR's anymore to speed up the game so why not go to 1-1 count.
The game is slowing down as we get older so why not help speed it up so we can PLAY A FULL 7 INNINGS......
Just my 02 cents...
I like the 0-0 count I get tried of paying for league or tournaments non senior included and they want to rush you out the door once you have paid your team fee , relax enjoy the game it's not work lol
Cecil, actually you wouldn't be rushed. You'd most likely get in 7 innings instead of 5 or 6.
