May 4, 2016 garyheifner 649 posts | Brickyard-Nancy Allen For your serious consideration: My 70 Gray Sox team did not come this year nor are we likely to return as is. Our decade + of coming down for it has been highlighted with cold, rain delays and and just poor conditions almost every year. The Milwaukee tournament is in Mid-May. The Quad City tournament is Mid-to later June. There is a huge hole in between these two. Move your tournament to the 1st week after Memorial Day or the week after. This would give the mid-west teams 3 tournaments in row with at least several weeks in between. It will also give us a much better chance of better weather. My above feelings are not just mine. I live in Sun City Huntley, and there are a number of guys who play in lower age groups and agree. |
May 5, 2016 Ho 301 posts | Gary: There are tournaments betwen the middle of May and late June in the midwest. One is in Columbus Ohio which draws 50 team and the other in Barberton which draws 90 AA and AAA teams. Ho |
May 5, 2016 CAT 200 posts | Those tournaments that Ho has mentioned are SPA tournaments and I would not recommend. Several of times, I have seen them change your team classification in the middle of a tournament. Once they have your money, there is nothing you can do. SSUSA does listen to your concerns and allows, if at all possible, the opportunity and ability for all senior players to be able to play and have fun. Some organizations just "hears" you but with my experience, SSUSA will "listen". Tournament fees are expensive so make it worth while.. |
May 6, 2016 garyheifner 649 posts | In the interest of budget and travel $$, we try and get 3 or so more local tournaments before the remaining 6 major tournaments that we travel a great distance to. We do play in 2 SPA. But mostly SSWC. Ohio just has not been in the plans to this point. |
May 6, 2016 garyheifner 649 posts | Nancy, do you have any feelings on this??? |
May 6, 2016 garyheifner 649 posts | After thought, Dave D, you are often at his tournament representing SSUSA. Do you have any thoughts on the above. |
May 7, 2016 DaveDowell Men's 70 4312 posts | garyheifner ... Tournament date scheduling is handled exclusively by Fran Dowell in the SSUSA office ... I have virtually no experience in this, but I know there are a lot of factors in play ... Some of those include the potential conflicts with other nearby (geographically AND chronologically) events by SSUSA and other associations, field availability in a city, SSUSA staffing availability, etc. ... The Brickyard Invitational has run on the first week(end) in May for as long as I can remember, so there's the tradition angle there as well ... The weekend you mentioned, the first after Memorial Day, is a tough one because that's the wrap up of our second largest annual event, the 10-day Rock 'n Reno Challenge Cup (over 200, and still adding, teams this year) and all Home Office personnel are allocated to that one ... I suggest you give Fran a call or send her an email to get your thoughts in front of her ... Good luck in Milwaukee! ... |
