Foul Tip
Count no balls no strikes. Ball is tipped directly back and the catcher catches the ball cleanly. Absolutely does not go higher than the batters head, straight back. Call?

SSUSA sanctioned event ruling: Foul tip, count is no balls, one strike ...

In our 60 plus senior league, we just modified the SSUSA rule so that any foul tip or foul ball caught by the catcher is considered a "foul out". We decided to reward the efforts of the catcher, whose age is usually in the mid 70's and up, to have a sense of accomplishment.
That might not be considered a competitive rule in some leagues, but it sure takes away any judgement calls concerning the height of the ball and makes it an easy call.
If you don't understand that now, you will when you are up in years and the best position for you is being the catcher.

Turbobob, good idea! In our league, when we have too many teams playing at once, the umpire sometimes IS the catcher! Mostly calling balls and strikes, while first and third base coaches call the bases (tend to be biased in favor of their own teammates, of course). It is hard for the umpire/catcher to call the height correctly when he is chasing a foul tip.

most of the assoc's now have it as an out if the ball does anything but go straight back to the catcher......the rule was mostly for fastpitch to determine a foul tip..vs a foul popout....also the assoc's do not require that it goes over the batters head...just the the catcher has to make some sort of move to go catch it....

I concur with the out no matter the height but a caught ball.
Shouldn't need to be above the head.
