Retirement Ceremony?

Have you ever seen a teammate or opponent have on on-field retirement ceremony?

Seeing baseball players making their final waves... or Olympians leaving their shoes on tour field/court/mat etc... makes me think about it.

I'd guess we all want to play until we physically can't, but I'm curious about hearing stories of players hanging it up in this manner.

Thanks!

does throwing bat & shoes in a trash can after going 1/18 @ Worlds ( & never playing again) count?

I have never seen a retirement ceremony but have seen celebrations of life, marriage proposals, and weddings on the diamond. Relevant items were placed on home plate, first base, or the outfield depending on the event. I have had requests that I have honored before for me to ring up a player on strike 3 or to eject them posthumously. Either of those might be appropriate for retirement. I wish them well. Just have fun with it. I am sure that it would mean a lot to all involved.

I saw my dad retire from the game. He was playing third and had a hot grounder hit to him. He couldn't get his glove on it and it hit him in the face and broke his glasses. He walked off the field, grabbed his equipment, gathered me an my brothers up and got in the car and left. Never played again. We would normally had laughed, but no one had the guts to do it. he laughs now, but if we would have laughed then, it would have been a bad deal.

We spread his ashes (at his request) in left field of his favorite softball field after he lost his battle with cancer.----------That's a retirement ceremony :)
