40s in vegas
Well run tourney this year. Thank you SSUSA!
Pros
Most games ran smooth.
most umps were on point and sociable as well
teams seemed evenly matched
When help was needed directors stepped in

We experienced 2 things. 1st some bums were punking our teammates 12 yr old son and wouldn't give our HR balls back to him unless he paid him. Director stepped in and punked the bum and problem was solved. The other occasion was more so against the team we were playing. 5 man would run up next to the pitcher and sometimes in front. We didn't care but the blue told him to move back to his position. Director stepped in and fixed the call
Cons
the batters box.
Each and every ump enforced the box in different ways. This became an issue for me as I stand on the chalk so if the box isn't 6 inches off the plate ad 36 inches wide it becomes a big adjustment for me. Some umps made lines in the dirt making the box 26 to 28 inches wide. Tough to adjust when you have a long swing and tall. Some umpires say just wipe the box away its not true to size, and some allowed my stance for most of game then force me into a smaller drawn box in a crucial at bat. Then called me a dick for complaining.
Only other con was seeding was a mess but that happens when trying something new.

Overall I rate the 40s major experience and A- for 2016.

Recommendations for next year
Umpires that are sociable and not about the power
With all the vendors out there I feel with the money spent the coaches meeting/raffles should have bats, gloves, jerseys added into the mix.
Standard rule if the batters box is not to exact measurements then enforcement should be 1 standard action. We have rules for a reason but to enforce a box rule when the criteria isn't met isn't right.
Until next year

Vinny, what did the director do to "fix the call"?
Last year we also had the problem of the incorrectly drawn batter's box.
One would think this would be an easy fix.

on the box call I didnt ask for a director i just dealt with it and waited for an outside pitch that was a ball but in my sweet spot when I extend. The ump that called me a dick allowed my mound and said I was good at first at bat. So second and 3rd AB I used the same dirt pile. At 4th ab the other team complained again so he dragged a new line with his foot and said I let you get away with it all game and now your going to be a dick about it. I batted and grounded out. 5th at bat down 1 guy on 2nd the walk guy in front of me and I stood on the original mound and asked the ump if im good. He says sure, catcher argues and he says just play ball. Backside piss rod to tie the game and go on to win the game.

Rule 7.3(1) if batter erases part of the box he get a strike. However since the UMP is an 'offociating' component he should suffer a game payment forture or something more serious if he does it... No mention the Umps doing the obliteration...not good.

I'm sure you're not the only player that had to adjust for one reason or another, but every player has to contend with it. As for being called a dick that isn't good either. I think he has problems.

I thought this year was by far the best showing for umpires. Most were very friendly explained things before the game. Hustled into postions and most had consistent strike heights. Most emphasized walking the box and being out in front of it. Some umpires didn't care. No biggie adjust to what their calling. Only saw 1 umpire really cross the line in a game that I believe sons of thunder was playing. He totally provoked the batter. Close pitch hit right on the edge no call from ump catcher throws the ball back still no call batter turns to ump ump looks right at him throws his hand up and emphasizes strike looking directly at him then walked up in his face. Totally uncalled for and unprofessional. The guy did say a cuss word and ump tossed him. Really surprised the guy showed that much restraint and didn't push or hit the umpire. ....One director believe it was Mike was awesome our afternoon game glare was terrible off the roof couldn't see crap he delayed the game 10 mins till we could see. Very thankful as first pitch flew up the box. Lol this year I thought everything went smoothly and give everyone props who was involved this year.
Anyone know the results of the 40's major?

No sorry Benji we came in 14th. So you have to wait.
Major was
1. layer cakes
2. Cody Roofing
3. Smash
4. Diablos
5. Damaged Goods
6. Sofa Kings

I agree just as there are a hole players sometimes you get a hole umps. Overall a very good effort by SSUSA this year.

Anyone know what the standard protest is to a batters box not true to rules in size? Do you ask for a director? do you have to follow whatever the ump draws? The following game we played again and i asked the crew to make it wider and he said he was just following the line from before.

As someone who also likes to stand off the plate, I've had a few instances over the years where an improperly marked box has given me and the ump problems. What has always solved the prob. for me is these few steps:
1.) Confirm that the ump knows that a reg. box should be 36".
2.) Show the ump that your bat is 34".
3.) Lay the bat across the width of the box with the tip being where the inside line should be.
4.) Put your foot on the end of the outside of the bat and draw a line from there.

As with most things in life, it's also about the presentation. If you immediately become confrontational when the ump questions your stance, he prob. isn't going to stand there and let you do all these steps. But, if you don't try to show him up, they'll almost always be patient with the batter.
