knee problems
I would like to know if anyone has experienced the same problem im having right now .Im sixty years old lift five days a week and have always had a big leg kick in my swing, ive always hit with power and swung fairly hard.Im 6ft2 260 pounds. This fall i have had serious knee pain and found out probably will need replacement surgery if not by next year then certainly soon after. Anyways my problem is that towards the end of this year because of knee pain i noticed i didnt have that high kick anymore and my bat speed had seriously dropped off alot of times even though they werent hurting. I think in my mind i was worried about it hurting so i found myself hitting off my front foot losing power.I would like some feedback from anyone having these issues and what they may have done to solve it. Thanks

Big cat, I had a similar issue. You do lose power because sub consciously you feel pain.
In place of knee replacement ask your orthopedic surgeon if you are a candidate for what is called accu- fill. It is a newer procedure in place of replacements. I had this done last November ,it takes about six weeks of recovery with PT. Google it.
Also have you tried the gel shots? It is a series of three shots, with a gel that lubes the knee. Just some thoughts. Good luck.

Mannjo...those gel shots don't always work, and when they do, they don't last too long 3-6 months.

Curious about that procedure you referenced though I looked it up and it doesn't seem like something that is done for cartilage damage related to arthritis or just deteriorated cartilage.
It looks more like something for Bone diseases. I could be wrong.

Mulewhipper, you are right about the gel shots. They are good for six months ,but only last about 3-4 months in active people. That is what I was told. Medicare pays for them every six months.
On my knee I had bone on bone. Arthritis had progressed ,plus I had cartilage removed . Outside of a knee replacement ,the accu fill procedure filed in the spaces where the bone had been worn away.i am very happy with it. I run without pain.

Unfortunately, there is no magic pill. If you can afford to loose a few pounds remember, for every pound you loose you take four pounds of pressure off your knees. Perhaps weight loss combined with some mobility/stretching therapy can make you comfortable enough to at least kick the can down the road for a few more years. Of course the human body has amazing recuperative and healing powers of it's own so you can never say enough about restingGood luck.

I would not hesitate to recommend the gel shots to anyone that wanted to try them. I have had excellent results with two different brands of these type of shots. As for length of time they help, that would depend on the individual. I had also heard they only last about 6 months, but for me, this has not been the case at all. The first shot I had of Synvisc One lasted me a year and a half. Yep, 18 months. I would generally just go once a year and get the shot, one in each knee, because that was what my insurance company would cover. After using the Synvisc One for 3 years, the insurance company decided to not authorize refills of SVO, and I was forced to switch to another brand. Got a shot of that back in Jan, again was told it should last about 6 months, still haven't gone back for my refill. My doctor has said that I will need TKR in both of my knees, but as long as the gel works for me, I'm putting off any type of procedure. And just to add, I lead a very, and I do mean VERY, active lifestyle. The gels do not work for everyone, but I have been very happy with the results. Good luck with whichever route you choose, and whatever you do, I hope you can keep on playing as long as you wish.

Ocden, I have had knee issues due to arthritis and tearing meniscus. Which has resulted on bone on bone. When I went to the doctor last November he recommended this relatively new procedure ,where they go in and fill the spaces with this cement. It then actually becomes new bone. He said it is the last step before a knee replacement. I had some discomfort for two to three days after the procedure. I then started PT and in six weeks I felt great. I went and played indoor softball in January and went to a tournament in Florida in March. It was the first time in two years I did not have nagging pain in my knee. I did get the gel shots again after the accufill. The first time I got the gel shot it had no effect. I am holding off on any knee replacement until it is absolutely necessary. Some guys I play softball with have got the replacement and rave about them. Others say if they had to it again they would not do it.
The only thing I can recommend from experience is get a sports oriented orthopedic surgeon. I find they stay up on the latest technology and understand the athlete better.

Thks for the info Mannjo,I've been bone on bone for over 4yrs with pain of course, & avoiding replacement as well as my ortho doc says it would probably limit my running. Therefore i've been looking at other solutions. I suppose this is a fairly new procedure.Probably my ins.won't cover it. Where are u located ?

I am in Massachusetts. Medicare paid for my procedure. It is I would imagine cheaper than a knee replacement,so your insurance might pay for it.

Always hesitate as there is no going back with knee replacement. I had micro fracture surgery about 18 months ago and I am running as well as ever. Rehab is very important but replacement should be the very last option. Good luck!

I also have some arthritis and torn meniscus in both knees, can't run as fast as before or jump as high, I just turn 50 years old. i been playing baseball and softball for years,, i have my good days and bad these.. Doctor told me i have 80 years old knees and he dose know why i am still walking or running, He wanted to me to have my knees replace and that it would be a 50/50 chance you would not be to run as much and in about 15 years you come back and replace them again.. All you guys are right on how to get treatment.. My state of mind is that if you listen to your body and don't do to much to strain your body.. It's ok to have a pitch runner,, i rather be on the field playing ball then being on the couch.. as for me, going under the knife will be the last, last option. but until then i will play until i can't no more...keep playing guys,,,

FOR THE OF THE GAME!!!
