Running up ????
What is "exactly" RUNNING UP IN THE BOX?

Many hitters, especially from the midwest with a 16" back ground, shuffle step to the ball. Some take several quick steps to the ball.

Is running up on the ball what most of the left handed batters do in girls softball?

Can U run up quickly and hit the ball as long as U stay completely in the batters box?

Depending on the pitcher I will "run up". If he throws deep I start back in the box. If I get two strikes and he throws one flat and short to the front of the plate I will step forward with each foot. I'll still be in the box when I swing.
I can see if the batter is up front to begin with and then takes a step or two that he will be out of the box. Seldom do I see him called out for stepping out of the box.

gary, no its not like girl left handed batters....I see more right handed batters doing it and they do not slap at the ball its a swing...and yes it is legal... 7.3 • BATTING POSITION A. The batter must have at least some portion of both feet on or inside the lines of the batter's box at the start of the pitch. A batter who steps out of the batter’s box at any time during the pitch and then hits the ball, fair or foul, shall be called out. Steps out means touching the ground completely outside of the lines of the batter’s box.

90-95% of the fields we play on have NO batter's box....we used to say as long as you didn't cross over the plate, you could "run" up as far as you wanted....I believe the rule has changed.....but the question remains......what if there is no box????

I still think the easiest way is to word the rule to say the batter must have one foot within the length of the strike mat at contact...
