EH & DH ??????
I overheard a couple of guys at Florida tournament last week (FYI we did not play against them)

I know what EH (extra hitters) are--------we often bat 12 or 13 (maybe even 14) in Friday seeding games, and trim line ups down to 10-11 & turn the top of the order over more in double elimination.

I heard a guy on another team say they had a guy who was a great fielder but not a very good hitter so they were going to DH for him (not put him in the batting order)-----like American League Baseball or almost any level of baseball???

To my knowledge if you play in the field, you have to bat in Adult Softball, in just about any association, seniors or other???

Honestly, I have never taken a look see, to make sure everybody we are playing against in the field, is in the batting order???? Maybe its done all the time, but I don't think so??????

But I am checking to see if this (DH) for somebody in field (Pitcher or other) and position player does not hit, can actually be done, because its news to me???

Thanks

17Black - our senior league allows a team to have 1 person play the field and another bat in that persons position in the lineup. I think they instituted it a couple of years ago. I became manager of our local team this past year and used it a couple of times. I did it mostly in the playoffs. During the season you want everyone to play. If for some reason 1 of them has to come out of the game, then either the other player has to assume both offense and defense or I think the replacement assumes both. And no it was not us who did this in Fl., I'm not even the manager.

On another note, our league also institutes a courtesy runner for a batter. The batter MUST have a medical waiver so he bats, and the runner runs once contact is made. He must stand 5 feet behind the extension of 3rd base line so in effect, he is 70 feet from 1st base. (We plays 65 foot bases.
The town instituted this for people with disabilities.

only thing I have seen was an ADA rule. The player was their pitcher but could not run so they were allowed to skip his at bats per the ADA rules. This was cleared with the director at the start of the tournament.

I believe you can get around it by using pinch hitting for him twice then he is out of the game. We used that method on a team I played on that had a weak hitting pitcher. First time up with men on I would pinch hit for him. 2nd time I would pinch hit and stay in to finish the game pitching.

Fred you as a pinch hitter can only bat once in that role. The second time would have to be a different batter right?

Paul0784:No. Rule only states that I can't be in the lineup and I can only substitute for the same player in the same spot in the batting order.

A couple of years ago there was a discussion (on the website) to allow unlimited defensive players, just like courtesy runners. Any player on the lineup card could go in and play defense for anyone but not be hitting. You would still have a regular batting order of the starters. Interesting ... especially in seeding games to get everyone some action.
