Quick pitch
In Las Vegas, I was at bat. In between pitches, I remained in the box but was not ready for the next pitch. As I looked up at the pitcher to get ready for the next pitch, the pitch was already halfway to the plate. I complained to the umpire about the quick pitch. He replied, "If you are in the box, all you have to to do is raise your hand and ask for time."

Made no sense to me. I was obviously not ready for the pitch as I hadn't even looked in the pitcher's direction. The rule below seems pretty clear and it seems to put the responsibility on the pitcher to wait until the batter is ready. Am I missing something? This quick pitch rule may be written differently than other softball/baseball versions. SSUSA is all about sportsmanship.

Rule 1.56
Quick pitch
A pitch made by the pitcher with the obvious attempt to catch the batter unprepared. This would be before the batter takes his desired position in the batter's box or while he is still off balance as a result of the previous pitch.

Thoughts?

Initial thoughts are [1] it's a judgment call not subject to appeal or protest; [2] if you're not ready to hit, it's probably not a good idea to loiter in the batter's box; and [3] a reminder that you can't call time, but but you may only request, which the umpire (usually) grants ...

Also, you quoted the Definition of a Quick Pitch at Rule Book §1.56 ... The actual playing rule is at Rule Book §6.11 (on page 35), is a bit more specific than the definition, and takes precedence over the definition ...
