When did bats start getting END CAPS ?
Hi!

I'm doing research... when did bat makers start using END CAPS? What year?

Can anyone point to a particular make and model?

Thanks !

Bruce a lot before demarini. I still have some old Bombats with endcaps. I started playing softball in 1980 and the first bat that I used had an endcap.I think that I still have it too.It was a bombat as well.

You are correct. Thinking back the 35oz Easton that I had in the late 80's had a semi clear endcap. I remember bats before that with a large plug in the end.

Jim,
Louisville Slugger started the TPS model that was rolled over and had urethane end loads. It was dark blue with silver and red writing on it. The visible end plug material was red. On my bats and other players under contract with Louisville bats, the visible plug material was black. Then they came out with the silver/black Rich Plant model that had a red plastic end cap. This is 1989/90 I believe. Easton then came out with the SX1 which was silver/black with a semi clear end cap on it with urethane/bb shot in it for end loads. Bombat did make some models slightly ahead of these with end plugs/caps as did Steeles. I was testing equipment for them back then and both of these were actually produced for them at American Modern Metals. I know Mike Macenko can also give you insight to this as he was also doing research and testing with Steeles back then.

I believe it was back in the mid to late 70's when Bombat came out with a bat with an end cap. I thought their first models had a cap and shortly after they went to a solid end.

Thanks:

The first end cap that I remember seeing was in the mid to late 80's. I hadon't two of them, they were the Easton SX-1 Power Core. The end cap was semi clear. I believe they labeled it as CU-31 Alloy. It was a great bat at that time.

I remember aluminum bats with black end caps from middle school PE class 1972-73. Can't recall the brand.
