| Dec. 6, 2016 HAT MAN Men's 50 229 posts | Triple Play or Not? - Help with call Here is one (i cant post new threads so had to piggy back) Bases loaded no out Ground ball hit to first playing even with the bag. Attempt to tag runner on first. runner out of baseline called out. 1st baseman then steps on first out 2. here is the tricky part. 1st baseman throws home and umpire makes immediate out call, catcher then roles ball to ump and we proceed to dugout. The other team appeals saying the force was taken away (correct statement) and the runner never passed commitment line ( we believe he did). After some thought the ump says i didnt see him cross so runners on 3rd and 2nd two out. didnt challenge because we were winning. Discussion after the game with ump was is that the right call? By making the immediate out call which ended the inning our catcher had no need or fair process to throw the ball down to get the runner off 3rd or in a pickle. By overturning a 3rd out call the favor went to the offense making him safe with no play. So while i get he called the force too soon the defense was penalized for it because we could have just ran at the runner, pickle or what have you. So do you leave the call the same, ask for a director override or side with the offense. |

REPLY: HAT MAN... ... if the umpire said he didn't see the runner pass the C/L then he has to admit he should have never made the out call... when an umpire makes a call to early or an incorrect call he is allowed to use his judgement to place runners where he believes they would have been had the incorrect call not been made...so if in his judgement the runner seeing the ball thrown home would have made it back to 3rd then he would return both runners...as far as getting the UIC or tour. director involved that is always your choice if you think a RULES violation has occured |

| Dec. 6, 2016 HAT MAN Men's 50 229 posts | Thank you SSUSA. I have tried to start several new threads and it wont come up. The next time i try if it doesnt work i will call the office. B.J. the ump did recognize he called it too early and was thinking it was a force. We never asked if he thought the runner would have made it back with a throw from home. I couldnt see that possible if he was inches from the commit line and catcher had ball in glove. but either way one team would have felt wronged. the next guy got a base hit and scored those two. In the end we won by 3 lol |
| Dec. 8, 2016 stick8 1992 posts | If I was umpiring in that situation I have 2 outs (as described) but the play would not have been over after the throw home and the catcher subsequently rolling the ball to the ump. Since your team went into the dugout thinking you had three outs the runners on 2nd and 3rd could have scored. If the ump didnt see the runner on third cross the commit line before retreating back to third he cannot call him out. |
| Dec. 8, 2016 B.J. 1107 posts | Stick...the only reason they thought they had 3 outs was because the HP umpire initially made a quick and incorrect call of the runner on 3rd going home.... so if you made the incorrect call causing the defense to believe they had 3 outs...you then would change it and award both runners home? |
| Dec. 8, 2016 HAT MAN Men's 50 229 posts | Stick8 My thing is why would try for a 4th out. u,p says out out and out at home. so we walked off. our team didnt go thinking we had 3 outs both teams walked off because the ump said it was three outs. He over turned as out outfields were getting to our dugout. Granted if he stays with 3 outs the offense will feel cheated. |
| Dec. 8, 2016 stick8 1992 posts | BJ, understood. If that was me I would unfortunately have to stay with my original call, no matter how wrong it appeared. I'd definitely have to eat crow but if you change a call then your opening up pandora's box for future calls and that would be a lot worse, if you get my drift. That being said, if this was a two man system, then you can ask the umpire who made the call for help from his/her partner. |
