ILLEGAL or ALTERED BATS.
SS-USA, SPA, LVSSA: I was told today, that the SUMMIT, has adopted a 'New' BAT POLICY. Is this true?

I was informed that if, one is asked to give up their bat 4 testing & fails to do this, than that person will be BANNED for 10 YRS. Is the 10 yrs, in all? or, just that ONE organiz'?

I was also told, that if, one gives up their bat 4 test' & the bat is ILLEGAL-ALTERED, that person will be BANNED for 5 yrs. Is that 5 yrs from all orginiz'? or just that ONE organiz'?

ALSO, that in any case, the TEAM MANAGER, is also BANNED for 1 yr.

FRAN, RIDGE, ETC.... What is the 'NEW' ruling?

THANKS.......The STONEMAN............

Stoneman I believe you are going to find this is going to be true. Basically would amount to a lifetime suspension. I would highly recommend that everyone know who the source of the bats they are obtaining is.

The ban for a coach is 1 year. The question that I have to ALL who have coached or are presently coaching; do you think you should be SUSPENDED one year for a player altering a bat (not talking about tape or cones)?

Major League Baseball Coaches do not get suspended for a player corking a bat or doing steriods.

I think this is a bad rule & I have already stated my case on the SPA Message Board website.

What do you other coaches think?

Coach should be suspended on 1st offense for the rest of the tournament and the next tournament the team is in. Second time, the rest of the tournament and the next 5 tournaments the team is in. Third time 10 years.

I am all for suspending a player if he/she is caught using an altered bat. But suspend the coach or manager...please! I am a manager and know I would have absolutely no idea of what to look for or any idea of who is swinging what though I try and remember to tell our players prior to the start of each tournament of the SSUSA bat policy. Even that does not always happen as you get busy and forget.

We play a ton of tournaments during the year, last year about 22 tournaments. In order to play that many tournaments you need a long list of phone numbers to be able to get that many players out and some players may play for our team once or twice so really have no idea how to manage the bats they use or what to look for.

To give the team manager a suspension is ridiculous and too easy of a way out.

You can't convince me that with today’s technology it would not be a simple matter of building / checking a bat with a Comp. chip scanner or something.

Cheers

If he's gonna manager a team he should know or at the least have an idea you swinging an altered bat. There's not to many managers you just manage a team, they play themselves, they know!!!!!!!

Longball12: I coached for 2 years & it is tough work; but I loved the sport & wanted to put another team on the field in SSB. I played also & paid most of the entry fees out of my own pocket; it was my love for SSB that got me to do that. I could have played with another team and not had any hassle.

I wanted to put a team together, because I knew some Ga. guys that were w/o a team & some of us had played together with Faith Electric. Also, I picked up guys that had never played SSB & put them on the field..........all because I loved SSB.

Now, to take me & suspend me for a year.........does not suit my fancy; but I do agree with a one tourney suspension.
This is more in line & fair to the coach/manager.........like Gary19 states: "babysit 50 year olds????? Reading this new rule has already discouraged me from starting another team & will discouraged many others.

Great thread

This is a tired subject but with new twists. I could not agree more with the guys that are pleading the manager's case. I do not know how to determine an illegal bat from a legal one other than the performance of it... certainly not by the looks of it. Sure, if there is dried glue coming out of the end cap and it practically falls off the table (heavy end load) I might be suspicious. Short of that I could not tell the difference.
Rather than lay this on a manager, why not train the umpires and other tournament officials to take a proactive role. I can state all of this without a personal ax to grind as I'm no longer the mgr but I'm sympathetic to those that are.
Has anyone come forward with ANY MEANINGFUL DATA suggesting that illegal bats are prevalent? Until they do, why should we change the game?

Managers can ask his players not to swing altered bats, but he can't be sure that they would not. We are talking about grown men. Those that swing altered bats don't ask the manager for permission! They just use them for reasons they alone know. The manager is not in the equation.
