March 14, 2017 B.J. 1104 posts | INTERFERENCE PENALTY SSUSA... scenario... bases loaded no outs... a ground ball hit to the SS who throws to 2nd for an out...the runner going into 2nd interferes with the fielder attempting to turn a double play... I know the rule says If in the umpire’s judgment the runner's collision with the defensive player involved in the play negates a double play, the umpire may award a second out. I have always called the runner closest to home out... is there anywhere in the rule book where it states WHICH RUNNER is the awarded out |
March 14, 2017 SSUSA Staff 3467 posts | NO • The only place in the SSUSA Rulebook that provides for calling the runner out who is closest to Home is in the event of interference by an on-deck batter ... See Rulebook §7.2 E. 1 (on page 40) ... |
March 14, 2017 B.J. 1104 posts | thx for the quick response...now another question...is the out call on the runner closest to home the correct call? and if not who would you call out on the original scenario |
March 14, 2017 B.J. 1104 posts | thx again... and basically your answer is what a team brought up after a call....they wanted a run to score...my reply was the fielder wasn't given the opportunity to throw home or to 1st because he was bumped into... runner closest to home is out... has SSUSA ever thought of using (asa) rule where it is cut and dry and NO NEED for judgement on awarded out... if you are called out and then interfere the player closest to home is out |

March 15, 2017 Garocket Men's 55 259 posts | B.J you are correct in the ruling above but remember in ASA it states if interference by a runner THAT HAS ALREADT been put out, Then the runner closet to home is called out. In the scenario above the runner going to second was already out and by all other associations other than SSUSA the runner closet to home is also called out. Unless the umpire calls SSUSA only about 90% of the umpires will miss this call in the heat of the game. |

March 16, 2017 B.J. 1104 posts | stick...good point...another reason to use the asa rule where no judgement is called for...punish the offense for the interference |
