Anything different then the intent that the bat was made for, is considered illegal! period... Why Roll it when you can have fun breaking it in?

Youngen • Rolling a bat is considered altering that bat ... Here is the complete SSUSA policy regarding breaking in a bat:

The ONLY acceptable and LEGAL method for breaking in a bat is the use of that bat, as intended by the manufacturer, to strike regulation softballs ... ANY other break in methodology, whether or not easily determined, is considered ALTERING A BAT ... See Rulebook §3.4(6) on page 16 for the penalty provisions for using an altered bat ...

ANY activity other than the method mentioned above that changes and enhances the technical performance characteristics of a bat (as manufactured) is prohibited ...

Hopefully, the foregoing is clear and concise ...

Ok second question. If the end cap pops off my bat can I just glue it back on and be good?

YES, if that's all you do ... Minor repair differs from altering ...

I disagree...I put a cap back on a Miken and sent it back. They stated the bat was altered...they sent the bat back to me cut in half, I was pretty pissed. (it was a Miken Psycho 2013).When I called they said any tampering with the bats construction is considered altering.

Interesting disagreement ... We stand by our assertion that simply gluing the end cap back on is NOT altering that bat ... The key phrase in our response was: "..if that's all you do.." ... Which sort of begs the question "is that all YOU did?" ...

IMO - Apples and Oranges - The difference is in the interpretation of the governing body. Miken did not want to honor a warranty thus financial consideration. SSUSA does not believe the fix created an enhancement to the performance of the equipment, thus you did not affect the integrity of the product.

IMO Opinion rolling is always altering the bat. The breakdown of the fibers are done in an even manner which increases the sweet spot of the bat and alters performance.

Back in the day, I might have hit my bat against against a tree or pole or something, but it had more to do with me not being able to hit a softball when I needed to.

Besides, I don't think that helped aluminum much other than bend the handle.

It was the light pole in Phoenix that caused the most problems. Bent my best bat and that was the last time I took my frustrations out something other than the real problem. Operator error.

I sincerely believe rolling is far more than just break in.

I was playing in a self-umped-pick-up league about 3 years ago. I grabbed my ball bag and forgot to put my 28 oz. U-2 in it. Just had a 16" bat.

At the field, I asked a guy if I could swing his. My first hit one hopped the fence and my second hit the top of the fence in LC. Now, this is a guy {me} who hadn't hit the warning track in 22 tournaments.

When I said it was the hottest bat I had ever hit, He said it was special-ROLLED.

I also sincerely believe there are a goodly number of guys out there using rolled bats and think it is perfectly OK. 3-6 hitters at (70-AAA)are usually big hitters and can drive it deep. Most hitters from 7 on are mostly singles hitters. When U play a team and #s 11-14 are hitting the warning track or more, makes me wonder if the bats are-as above-SPECIAL

I forgot to a mention a positive to rolled bats. It your team
is using them, U might win "A" big tournament. But, they will put your ass on the fast track to Major and Major plus. Have fun playing the same small hand full of teams, over and over,at those levels.

I think as we get older and slower,
The more a senior bat resembles a 30oz tennis racquet, the better the results for the hitter

Loss of bat speed is compensated with increased mass.
Extra soft flex in bat permits better storage of elastic energy with good transfer of momentum ....as opposed to deforming the ball with resultant energy losses due to friction.

The problem is the above is a pretty good description of bats exceeding bpf=1.21

Even though manufacturers of senior bats may design and build to the SSUSA performance standard, there is little doubt that both " legally approved use" and rolling will transform the bat into something much hotter than bpf of 1.21

I would be among those that believe that rolling has the potential to be a better method to increase bat flex over a larger portion of the barrel. To what extent it exceeds the performance of a legally broken-in bat , I cannot say.
We can only speculate what those values may be because SSUSA has no real protocol for testing once the bats enter the market or get on the field.
IMO.

We are already able to swing in legalized shaved bat, why would you want to do anything other than hitting a softball with these crazy bats.
