April 7, 2017 gonz 51 posts | First Base glove Hi all, I was watching a game and noticed that the pitcher was using a First Base Glove, the one that looks like a catchers glove. I thought only first base or catcher could use this glove. Did they change the rules so that now any position can use this glove. Mahalo Sherwin Gonzales Hawaiians #35 |

April 7, 2017 gonz 51 posts | so only in ASA. when did they change the rule. Mahalo Sherwin Gonzales Hawaiians #35 |

April 8, 2017 Uncle Mike Men's 60 122 posts | The umpires allowed it at the Worlds last year in Las Vegas. In our game against Northern Exposure/ Alaskan Kings they had 2 outfielders wearing them. We asked the umpires, they said they were allowed to use 1st baseman mitts in the outfield. |

April 8, 2017 Uncle Mike Men's 60 122 posts | We didn't make a big stink about for a couple of reasons. It was a seeding game and it didn't cause us to lose. We got outplayed. Right away I thought the umpires were from ASA, but otherwise it was a solid performance by them. We are just blessed to be able to play this great game at our ages. Maybe not at the levels we want, but better that sitting on the couch. Appreciate all that you and SSUSA does, don't always agree- but when you take the time to explain to us the logic behind the decisions. I can understand the why's |
April 8, 2017 k man Men's 65 326 posts | Other than being told you can't wear a mitt other than 1st base or catcher, what is the penalty if a position player fields a ball with the mitt that results in an out and is immediately brought to the umpires attention? Awarded 1st base??? |
April 8, 2017 B.J. 1106 posts | I've never seen a SSUSA rule on this but the ASA rule is that the offensive manager has the option of taking the play or having the runners return and the batter go back to the plate and hit again but start with the same count he had before the hit |
April 8, 2017 B.J. 1106 posts | also this play was just discussed a few posts ago "the do over" and Garocket had the correct answer for the penalty of an illegal glove catch |
April 9, 2017 B.J. 1106 posts | Dave, since SSUSA does not allow mitts except for 1st base and catcher what is the call...is it the same as ASA...Thx |
April 9, 2017 DaveDowell Men's 70 4315 posts | The penalty is not addressed in the SSUSA Rulebook (and should be) ... In the absence of coverage in our Rulebook, our umpires are supposed to default to the ASA Rule ... I have seen umpires continue play without a penalty other than requiring the offending player to remove the "mitt" from play unless the position player is a catcher or 1B ... We'll probably look at this in the winter Rules Committee sessions .. |
April 10, 2017 B94 Men's 50 138 posts | Rather than updating the rule book for with a penalty if the pitcher is wearing a first base mitt I think the rules need to be amended to allow the pitcher to wear a "mitt" if it makes him more comfortable in protecting himself. In the current game pitchers are wearing chest protectors, shin pads and other PPG to feel safe as well as the mandatory protection of a mask/pitching helmet so why would SSUSA not allow a pitcher to use whatever glove/mitt he feels comfortable with that meets "legal specs"? Maybe it's time to adapt the rule to simply give pitchers the best chance possible to protect themselves... Personally I don't see wearing a mitt over a traditional glove as a game changer. I think for most pitchers it's simply more about comfort level and maybe a bit more padding in the glove for those rockets hit at the closest guy on the field. Just my $.02... |
April 10, 2017 gonz 51 posts | thanks for clearing that up. So I guess it is fine for ASA but not Senior Softball. Sherwin Gonzales Hawaiians #35 |
