| April 25, 2017 Uncle Mike Men's 60 122 posts | Umpires- Pitching Rules I am starting to see more and more USSSA style pitching in SSUSA. I'm not complaining- I love hitting USSSA. But, the strike zone has changed to more like 4 feet to 9 feet- that was consistent in 4 of our 6 games played in Las Vegas. The other 2 games were more like 5 feet- 9 feet. Our big guys are routinely seeing 4 foot fastballs, and the umpires weren't calling it. Pitchers are taking 2 or 3 steps, juking, and faking. Umpires weren't making them come to a complete stop, etc... Are they receiving any feedback on how they are enforcing the rules ? |
| April 26, 2017 Paco13 424 posts | Actually this past weekend here at the VA Beach tourney we made few complaints to umpire about the same issue. Not sure if it is trend or not but it is happening. The other one is the 5 feet behind the pitching plate...is 5 or as far as they can get...don't seems to be enforced either. PR NINJA OUT "JESUS TE AMA" |
| April 26, 2017 Vance+50 Men's 60 66 posts | I noticed that as well in Valley last weekend. Anything around 10 feet was an illegal pitch. Saw some pitches called that didn't get over my head, wish it was because I was 6'5", but sadly that isn't the case. But what Paco mentions about pitchers throwing somewhere between the rubber and second base (closer to 2nd base) is the bigger problem to me. I don't pitch and if I did I would want to be as far away as possible, but this is a problem that needs to be corrected. |

| April 26, 2017 BruceinGa Men's 70 3233 posts | The umpires we had at Valley were good and very consistent. I think the reason many complain about the flat pitch is we aren't used to it. A 6' pitch seems very flat, especially if the catcher catches it around his knees or waist. Those that throw it seem to try to stay between 5 and 10 feet. If you have two strikes you might want to be swinging at that "flat" pitch. |
| April 26, 2017 Uncle Mike Men's 60 122 posts | I umpired for 25 years in So California SCMAF association, and 2 years for SSUSA- only did events in my hometown of Oxnard, Ca. for SSUSA. @bringiton- if I umpired, there would way too many complaints about the height. In our local league, we play over the batters head is the low limit and 16 feet high is the upper limit. So I would let pitchers throw higher because my interpretation of 12 feet is still 3 feet higher than what we are seeing during our tournaments. And I never said the umpires weren't doing a good job- I said the height limits that are called within our games are changing. I love hitting the lower arc, I am a low ball hitter !!!!!! |

| April 26, 2017 k man Men's 65 326 posts | In our local league, the head umpire for the league brought to the game a paint roller attached to an extension handle and he extended it to 12 feet so everyone would get an idea how high it really is. Higher than most people realize. As Bruce said, two strikes, you can't be standing there waiting for the umpire to call illegal on either a flat or too high pitch. It's a hitters game. |

| April 30, 2017 stick8 1991 posts | Can't say what it's like in Southern California but here in Michigan the umps they use are USSSA umps. Perhaps they aren't prepped enough on the pitching requirements of SSUSA. Just a guess on my part. |
