Line drive hits base
Line drive hits 1st or 3rd with out hitting the ground deflects into foul ground between 1st or 3rd. Fair or foul. Difference in hitting home plate and going foul?

Line drive that hits first or third and then goes foul is a FAIR ball
Home plate is in fair territory, if it hits the plate and goes in foul territory, it is a foul ball (unless it goes in foul territory after it passes first or third.

Just for the sake of discussion, 1st and third are in fair territory and if the line drive hit the front of the base it would have not passed 1st or 3rd.

coop3636 is correct ... FAIR ball by definition regardless of where it may deflect ...

it does not have to pass the bag, RULE 1.22 D. Touches first, second or third base..... and as far as home plate the add on to the rule is all of the strike mat is in fair territory

Rulebook §1.23FAIR TERRITORY

Fair territory is that part of the playing field within, and including, the first and third base foul lines from home plate to the bottom of the playing field fence and perpendicularly upwards. (NOTE: Any batted ball first hitting any portion of the strike mat then settling in fair territory is a fair ball. Fair territory includes the strike mat.)

Not just the strike mat, but it would still be a fair ball even if it hits foul territory before passing first or third base as long as it re-enters and settles in fair territory before passing first or third as long as it hasn't been touched by a person or object foreign to the natural ground while in foul territory.

1.22 D states the ruling exactly. Thanks BJ. I wonder if this is stated anywhere in MLB book? The fair territory statements are just generalities

in MLB home plate is located in fair territory ..in senior softball the back 1/2 of the strike mat actually extends past the fair/foul lines...I think the change of wording this past year was just a clarification that in senior softball the whole strike mat was to be considered in fair territory
