Overthrow on tag up
Specific rule please. Situation 1. Line drive to f6 throws to f1 R1 off 1st . Throw goes into dugout. Situation 2. Line drive to F9 Throws to F1 R1 off 1st. Throw goes into dugout. Award of bases? I think baseball and softball are not the same. Maybe even Senior is even different.

1. When the first throw is made by an infielder, two bases shall be awarded. The award shall be governed by the position of each runner at the time the pitch was made; however, if all runners, including the batter-runner, have advanced at least one base when the infielder makes the wild throw, on the first play after a pitch, the award shall be governed by the position of the runners when the wild throw was made.
2. When a throw is made by an outfielder or is the result of any succeeding play or attempted play, the two base award shall be governed by the position of each runner and the last base he has touched at the time the throw was made. If two runners are between the same bases, the award is based on the position of the lead runner.

in your scenario and awarding of bases... with your runner being off the bag during the catch... then re-tagging the base would count as 1 base and if they fail to re-tag the base they would be called out upon appeal

Would like to see the re tagging in writing somewhere. I understand the concept but :) Rule # Technically he was on 1st at the time of the pitch.

azcard....I don't think you will find the whole interpretation in writing in SSUSA rule book.... so I will post from ASA rule book and Dave can correct me if im wrong.... G. When the ball is live and is overthrown or is blocked:
EFFECT: All runners shall be awarded two bases. The award shall be governed by the position of the runners when the ball left the fielder’s hand. Runners must return to touch a base missed or a base left too soon. When two runners are
between the same two bases, the award is based on the position of the lead runner. Once a base runner advances to the next awarded base, the runner may no longer return to touch any base missed or any base left too soon.

So, The award is at the time of the pitch except when a runner is off base on a caught fly ball then it is at the time of the throw. I think they should put that in the rule books :). Thanks B.J.

B.J. the retouch is not considered a base. If the runner already had 1st as a legal base. He would be placed on third.
Seems like everybody makes it much to difficult. Usssa is different than all others USSSA is the base you are going too plus 1 in your scenario where he is going back to retouch that would be the base he is going to plus 1.
ASA and all others it is 2 bases from the release of the ball.

I guess you could say the first play of the infielder was the catch(out) the second play was the throw.

Garocket, usssa has amended that to make it easier to understand. It's two bases from the time of the pitch on a throw from the infield that goes out of play (unless the hit ball passes thru a fielder first). It's two bases from the time of the throw from the outfield that goes out of play.

in both scenarios the runner would get 3rd base... but the runner still needs to re-tag 1st base or would be called out on appeal....the SSUSA rule for over throws is posted above 4th post
