Collision at 1st Base
Batter-Runner bats resulting in a ground ball to 1st Base, Defender fields ground ball and runs to 1st base to make the out. In a close bang/bang play Defender steps on white 1st base bag and continues across red bag colliding with the runner touching red bag knocking both to the ground in violent collision. Umpire called runner out. Is the Defender interfering with the runner?

Remember, defense obstructs, offense interferes. Did the defender obstruct the runner? In this particular play which has happened to me twice, I would rule an out. The INTENT of the double bag is to PREVENT collisions. Both times when I could've collided with the first baseman, I chose to run left and PASS (not touch) the white portion of the bag, thereby avoiding a definite collision. I was still out on both plays but continued to play in the tournament because I avoided possible injuries. I would rather be out on the play than OUT of the tournament. Bottom line SENIOR guy, be safe out there. Your health is more important than game and I know SSUSA would agree with me.

Q19 is correct...I would consider this incidental contact where both the runner and the fielder were doing what they were suppose to do... the way you described the play I would have the B/R out also... remember the runner can always veer off and run by the bag in order to avoid a collision and if in the judgemet of the umpire he would have beat the 1st baseman to the bag he should be called safe

I had a violent collision at first with a guy. I am told my left leg came around and was over the orange bag. The runner was out for about 2 weeks and I was OK. Since then I have analyzed how this runner and others run to first. They run directly to the white bag, to the left of the foul line and then at the bag change direction to hit the orange bag.
My question is is there and rule stating when in the trip to first the batter must be to the right of the foul line? Our fields have no second line parallel to the foul line approaching first.
Thank you.

the rule is that depending on your base length 65' or 70' there should be a parallel line when the runner reaches 1/2 way to the bag which extends to 1st base....the runner only has to be in foul territory if there is a play being made on him by the catcher or possibly the pitcher who fielded the ball near the base line... the runner could be called out if in the umpires judgement he interfered with a throw to 1st base...no other rule exists... also the runner is only required to touch some portion of the safety bag...which means he is still legal if he steps between them
