weight training
I would like to know if players weight train during the season?If so do you go heavy like in the off season or go light with reps just to maintain a little strength and flexibility.I usually work out year round and i think ive become to big and stiff and its hurting my bat speed.I know stretching more will help some but im wondering if i should just go light til season is over

I tend to back it down on the heavy stuff during the season for just that reason, flexibility. Off season well for Sr ball really isn't much of an off season anyway. I would suggest some type of crossfit regimen you can still
Lift as heavy as you want and can maintain flexibility. Summer time I tend to cut back on heavy weight and opt for high reps lower weight just for the beach.

Great question which always gets athletes in a dilemma.....do I lift during a season? I think we must consider (at our age) what is best for us physically more than just for athletic performance. We know weight training is hugely beneficial to long term health and quality of life so I am an advocate of year round training. That being said modification of routine, amount of weight, and amount of overall training will vary athlete to athlete based on ability, age, goals, and the most important, personal safety. My short advice is to not do anything during your season that creates extended muscle soreness or lack of flexibility. I work individually with clients to construct programs that achieve this but it's difficult to just put out a "standard prescription ".

I always kept my training heavy, changing routine by including exercise that stretches muscles to maintain flexibility. You can't have complete flexibility but can have say 85%.
I have crashed by stepping on a wet base in 8am game and because of muscle volume l pop up and continue on to 2nd base. May be half knocked out but not hurt physically.

Also if you are a power hitter you can maintain hr power into your 70's.

Thanks Alan and crusher the info might help, i do lift year round and usually fairly heavy. I felt as though i was getting to muscled up and was losing flexibility and because of that losing bat speed.I have fairly big arms and chest so being tight in those areas made me feel like i couldnt get through the ball.Im trying a new routine now basically half the weight and more reps doing season and see if that helps with feeling looser.I f you have any tips i would gladly appreciate them

Great question big cat7... I myself had that issue at one time in my career where I was getting too strong and bound up. At that point I started stretching more and laid off of the higher weight. You can lift all year around..Just have to put together a good routine. There are trainers available if you have any issues on what to do and not to do. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys and thank you mike macenko,when you stopped going heavy did you still lift only using light weights?Oh and i didnt steal your name big cat you are the only true one,i was pitching years ago in a senior tournament here in tulsa and a throw from the outfield got past our shortstop and was headed towards the dugout i ran over and got it, now im 6ft2 about 270 so i wasnt moving real fast but i hollered at the shorstop did you see me get that im quick as a cat and he said yea a real big cat and it stuck

I am a little different...I surf winter waves n do more TRX with light weights. I begin heavier weight training around April, for Softball. Surfing keeps me loose, especially those crazy wipeouts! Stay healthy n safe. Aloha, Fabe

I do a circuit of weight training and aerobic exercise 4/5 days a week in the morning, year round. The whole thing takes about 70 minutes. I stay in the 12-15 rep area. At 73 years old, I am not worried about gaining any great additional strength. I just want to keep what I got and it really keeps my conditioning at a high level. Most of our tournaments are 2/3 weeks apart and I can stop several days before for complete recovery. I also have a large shake of muscle milk with fruits mixed in after each workout. Really helps with muscle recovery.

I also play in 3 softball leagues which means 3-4 games a week.
Even if I work out in the morning, doesn't seem to detract from my ability/game at night. I have even reached a point that if I miss a workout, I feel like crap the next day. Probably mostly mental.

I work out as heavy as I can year round. Here in Florida, we can play pretty much year round. So my weight training fits in between the leagues and the pick up games. In order to maintain some power, which has drastically gone down after age 71, I prefer to lift as heavy as I can during the year.

I say keep it light. 12 to 16oz curls. To change it up try something stronger in the 1oz range as well.

My two cents: I typically lift heavy in the off-season and then curtail the weights during the season. My body simply does not recover fast enough for me to continue the heavy weight training into the season. I tried continuing my lifting program into the season once, long ago, and I simply could not swing the bat - I was bulky and slow and was frankly embarrassed.

However, this year I made such good strides in the gym this off-season - gained strength, lost weight - I was so stoked that I decided that I was not going to stop lifting during the season this year. I was determined to make this work. All I did was change my routine and it's been working like a charm (knock on wood). I have not lost any strength (my goal during the season is not to gain strength, but to keep what I worked so hard for in the off-season) and I still feel real good and athletic on the field and am hitting the carp out the ball. I follow three rules:

1) Never lift the day of, or the day before a game - yeah, this can limit my time in the gym because I play in a lot of leagues, but I manage to work around it - rain outs are opportunities for an extra workout session :)
2) Each workout is a full body workout, no splits. (This way I am not totally exhausting any one particular body part that might interfere with my overall muscular balance on the field)
3) I still go heavy, but only 3 or 4 sets each exercise.
3a) Always be stretching...

It sounds simple, but it works and is a tremendous conditioning workout as well. I am still able to get in squats, bench, deads, etc... I don't sacrifice any power movements. I'm able to get to the gym twice a week, maybe three if I want to push it by going after a weeknight game. I have found that 2-3 times a week is enough time in the gym during the season to maintain my gains.

We are all different and our bodies all react differently to different stimuli. So what works for me may not work for you. This is simply what I have found that works for me and I wanted to share my moderate success story with you guys.

Thanks guys your comments really help and crusher i think i like the way youre doing it.I think going heavy will keep up my strength but only going three times a week wont make me feel bulky or stiff.

big cat7, one other thing discovered, you really need to relax your jaw and then on down to your shoulders. By lifting heavy you can tighten muscles up destroying flexibility and smooth swing.

You mentioned Tulsa, l played in senior league there about 15 years.
