Discussion: Batter hitting the strike mat

Gentlemen,
In our league, we have a player who, while making a legal swing at the ball, sometimes hits the strike mat with his bat either while or just before hitting the pitched ball. Is there anything in the rules about this and, if so, is there any penalty for doing this?
Thank you.
Steve Garceau, Head Umpire, Saddlebrooke Senior Softball Association
WTF?? I would suggest to this person to get some serious batting clinic help. I don't believe I've ever seen that before.

Tell the idiot that the game is softball and "NOT GOLF"...

in answer to your question... no... nothing in the rules
I think you're on to something SOFTBALLNUTZ ... One strike/stroke penalty for "grounding his club in a hazard" ...
too funny..
wow hold on
Are you saying his approach to hitting the ball is an OTL pendulum swing and bat hits ground before contact?
or are you saying while in the box he hits the mat like bam bam then swings. You know like a routine or rookie would do first time playing (ax chop)

I could deal with the 2nd option but not the first.

When do you play again I live close I have to come see this first hand!!!!!

Vinny,
You really don't want to see it. And, yes, he actually hits the strike mat during his swing not a "bam bam" then swinging.
He is a bit aggressive at the plate and we have asked him to replace his divots! He is a little "different".
Thanks all for your comments.
Guess the major question should be, what kind of hitter is he? Have seen some strange swing-types and this one might be at the top of the list, but if he is a "hitter" then so be it.

Does this joker move the mat from it's original position when hitting it?

Thanks
Sounds like a Cricket player...
Exactly what i was thinking Mulewhipper. Hard to imagine hitting a ball square with that swing plane. Is this guy the Lawn Dart Champion ? That swing has to be hard on the 2 piece bats.
