Policy Change on Player Exemptions Aug. 1, 2017 – Terry Hennessy CEO Senior Softball USA has announced two changes in player eligibility rules, which go into effect immediately: Players receiving medical exemptions to play at a lower skill level will be eligible to participate at the new level three months after the exemption has been granted. Players will be granted a “one-time” exemption to play on a short-handed team ONLY if they are the 10th player on men’s teams aged 40-65, or the 11th player on men’s teams aged 70-85. Players also must meet regional and age restrictions. The new rules have been implemented to address problems with the original exemption rules and to institute a policy that is available to all teams in a short-handed situation. What's the thinking behind the medical exemption? |
| Aug. 3, 2017 B94 Men's 50 138 posts | That's a tough "one time" exemption rule for short-handed teams that are traveling to get to an event. Everyone is looking for more participation at tournaments from players to tournament directors. I understand there may have been individuals taki8ng advantage of the rule however, I personally believe that teams should be allowed to attend with 11 as a bare minimum and 12 is a safer bet if that means two or three exemptions. None of us are getting any younger and injuries happen at tournaments. Limiting a team to 10 is a good way to "encourage" people to play hurt so their team doesn't forfeit once start to play an event under these circumstances. |
| Aug. 3, 2017 grayhitter59 Men's 60 345 posts | I agree 100% with B94. At our age a lot of different medical issues can arise at any given time. also financial issue for travel purposes. I don't believe that even 12 players is enough when traveling to a major tournament such as Vegas with the heat issue and temperatures that can reach 100+ on any given day. My 2 cents |
