Las Vegas Softball
I was reading the article, “Arizona, Texas & Washington Among Top Tier SSUSA States” in the latest SSUSA Newsletter. It mentions great weather, fields and game conditions as a factor. How is Nevada not on this list? We play softball 52 weeks a year like Southern Arizona does. And if lack of rainouts are a factor as mentioned by Texas, Las Vegas gets about 4.5 inches a year and Reno about 7.5. Additionally, of the four biggest SSUSA tournaments played each year, THREE of them are in Nevada! Why is Washington on this list? Well, just take a look at where the publisher of the paper is from to get that answer.
Nevada offers top quality softball with great fields, weather and the LVSSA organization that helps run some of the best tournaments. While SSUSA chooses to minimize what Las Vegas Senior Softball contributes to the top two biggest sanctioned tournaments in the US, I’ll fill you in. We supply Assistant Directors to help sign in players along with other administrative duties. We help make arrangements for softball fields, as needed. We supply workers to all the fields to drag, broom and line the fields to maintain great conditions for the players. We supply water to the teams and keep the dugouts and facilities clean. The coordination for this and other duties takes a great effort to run a quality tournament. It’s called the LVSSA/SSUSA World Masters because Las Vegas Senior softball started this tournament many years ago, then later partnered with SSUSA. I won’t argue that SSUSA does the bulk of the work to run these tournaments, but people should know just how important LVSSA is to it.
Nevada, in my opinion IS a Top Tier SSUSA State.
These comments are not made in any official capacity with LVSSA or SSUSA.

Hey Bob, Do you think Nevada would be one of the top places if you didn't have 3 of the top 4 SSUSA tournaments locked up for the next 10 years. Those tourneys should be bid on in my opinion. Just like Western Nationals is locked up in Sacramento every year. Believe it or not people don't like to go to the same place every year.

Sounds like to me Mr.Las Vegas is running for mayor. LOL.

Our weather (Florida) in the winter is great and in the summer not so good. That's why we are rated so high.

With that said the villages is a great retirement community, even though I don't live there, they have great parks and recreational facilities. SSUSA does not play there, they should 10 fields in 2 parks, top notch.

They have a tournament in October non-sanction, great time.
Open to 50 and 60 divisions no ratings, open homeruns and open runs per inning like the young bucks play.

TAT, don't know where you get your information, but those tournaments are not locked up for the next 10 years. If people don't like going to the same place every year, why has our tournament gone from 350 to 400+ to 500+ to now over 600 teams? SSUSA is running a business and I don't think they're going to a city that brings in 300 teams for the Masters. I could be wrong on that, but I don't think so.

The tournament numbers are increasing because more of the Baby boomers are getting back into softball, and the Gen X's are turning 40 and 50 simple demographics. I can guarantee you one thing Bob, you put the World's in another city and you WILL get 600 teams because it's World's!

So are you saying that Las Vegas, with it's world class hotels, gaming, restaurants, shopping and 14 complexes to field 600 teams is no bigger draw to senior softball Masters than, lets say Memphis or Kansas City?

How many Cities have sufficient softball complexes and hotels to accommodate 500 - 600 teams? I think Las Vegas is an ideal destination spot for a Worlds. Just my $0.02

Bob, Memphis or Kansas City? Really! I know there are other cities out there that can compete, World's used to be held in Phoenix, that's one. I know Orlando could host, I'm sure if you got the word out plenty of cities would be willing to accommodate World's and possibly build new facilities, I know teams complain every year about playing at Cheyenne Park. You also know that all 600 teams don't show up the same weekend.

Yes I did the research and the World's was in Phoenix for 5 years and 1 year in Seattle until the merger with LVSSA then it moved to Vegas and this year will be the 5th year. So it might be time for a change.
