out or not?
recent play: runner on 3b, no out. batter hits ball foul down the line with 2 strikes, runner jumps up to avoid being hit, in fair territory, but ball strikes his out stretched hand. What's the proper call? Ump's original call= double play!

Need more info......when the ball struck the runner, was the ball foul when it made contact with the runner? If the ball is fair when it hits the runner, then the runner is out and hitter gets first base. If foul, then hitter is out and runner remains at third. I see no scenario as to this being a double play.

ball was ruled foul ( third strike = out), said runner was "in play", therefore out. experienced ump, usually very competent.

Incorrect call on double play if third strike on batter yes batter is out. If ball is in foul territory unless 3rd base runner intentionally hit ball with hand all you have is foul ball batter out. It is always where the ball is in relation to fair/foul line.

Curty, mitch1414 is correct. If that ball struck the runner in fair territory that cannot be ruled a foul ball. It's a fair ball, the play would be dead, the runner at third would be out and batter gets first base. If it struck the runner in foul territory it's a foul ball, the batter is out for a third strike foul(unless he has 0 or 1 strike) and the runner on third stays on third. Interestingly enough in a couple of local mens leagues I umpire we allow any runner at third to stand at a chalked spot about 3 feet in foul territory adjacent to third base. It works out fine.
