Oct. 31, 2017 garyheifner 649 posts | Wind and Walks In a game in Ft. Meyers, (70s),we had a 30-35 MPH cross wind with gusts higher. I walked 12 and we got 21 walks. The game was a farce. Some of our hitters never swung at a ball. The only way to really pitch a strike was to keep the ball flat. Now the ump was in a bind with that 5-6 foot decision. What if the TD, ump and both managers agree-don't want fast pitch but let both teams know that anything from the pitchers upper chest area and displays some kind of arc is legal??? It would have a hitters game rather than a what the hell game. I think even U younger players, regardless of rating, would have been totally frustrated in this game. |
Oct. 31, 2017 SSUSA Staff 3483 posts | gary ... This circumstance is covered in SSUSA Rulebook §6.16 • WIND OR SUN AFFECTING BOTH PITCHERS (on page 37) ... Here's the applicable language from that rule ... "..In significantly windy conditions, if, in the judgment of the umpire, the wind is having a discernible adverse effect on the accuracy of both pitchers, the umpire may declare that only strikes count.." There is no other rulebook-compliant option, especially not one that can get cooked up by managers and/or umpires on the fly! ... Good luck! ... |
Nov. 1, 2017 garyheifner 649 posts | Thank you. I was not aware of this rule. I would have asked for the TD/Ump to enforce the rule. It would have cut down on most of the walks. I bat 5th and me and the 3 and 4 hitter never had a strike in the game. The ump did keep a sense of humor about it and mostly smiled. Fortunately the time ran out. It was the toughest conditions I have ever pitched in. I pitched balls several feet left of the mat land 2 or more feet to the right of the mat. |
