SSUSA thank you
Thanks for getting the 2018 schedule out, at least the big events. If you can answer this great if not I understand

I notice the spring championships for 40s in cathedral city is gone, is the spring world taking its place in st George/mesquite? If so how would we know which town the 40s are in? never been up that way and would like to add it to our team schedule.

For those that have been before, do you stay in Mesquite or stay in St George? which would be more enjoyable?

SSUSA Staff, does the change to 4 days also apply to 50 Major Plus? Or will you try to keep that group to 3 days. With only 12 to 15 teams that seems like a long tournament. Thanks, Yank

Does this mean we won't have 10:30pm start times delayed from 9pm due to games running late?

BIG disadvantage for east players when we NEVER played under the lights all year and it was like playing at 2am.

Vinny...even tho Mesquite is small...you are gonna like it better there. Not sure you can drink in St George past 9:00 in the evening. Just sayin there is a extremely large church group presence there! Congrats on doing well in Vegas. Now I will add to the Vegas part. I say that going to 4 days in Vegas makes it that much more difficult for us that are still working! Only way it works ok is if we get to play night games on Thursday. Most of us come in on Thursday anyways...but early games would force us to come in on Wednesday. I can see alot of guys not being able to do that.

Vinny ... Your thread got hijacked (what a surprise!) ... Here are some quick hitters for you based on my experience of scheduling and working as a Director at this event for over a decade ... Field assignments are not an issue ... The St. George facilities are as good as any dirt/grass fields in the country ... The Canyons Complex is seven fields in a spectacular "Chamber of Commerce Postcard" setting ... The Fields at Little Valley complex is also an exceptional four-field complex ... I always worked in St. George and stayed in Mesquite at the HQ hotel (CasaBlanca) because accommodations are generally cheaper in Mesquite, there is "more to do" in NV as compared to UT, and I love the scenic 40-minute or so drive through the Virgin River Gorge ... There are two three-field facilities in Mesquite, and both of them have two 300' softball and one 340± youth baseball fields ... Historically, it's been a well attended and fun event for the Spring ... Hope to see you there ...

I know Vegas is a huge tournament, but why make it 4 days?
Will it be?
2 RR games on Thursday?
Then start 3 GG on Friday? (which means lots of teams will be gone on Friday?)
This means everyone will have to be there on Wed
If it trying to get people to stay more nights, I don't think it will help.
Most people will just leave on Sunday night now instead of leaving on Monday

Staff and Mr. Dowell,

Thank you for getting the schedule out. A question and complaint/issue...

Question: Is there still a So Cal Championship? Just waiting on location or has it been discontinued?

Complaint: Before deciding to make 50s and 55s a 4 day tournament, maybe a player poll should be taken. As a manager, I KNOW right now, I am going to have issues fielding a team on Thursday. All of my guys work and have families and pulling 2 to 3 days of vacation from their families for the tournament is going to force players to make a choice of keeping family happy or skipping worlds. My players have no problem playing late into the night on Friday and Saturday. Most of my guys, and I am fairly certain that this runs across the board arrive Thursday night or Friday morning depending on our start time. Plus the added cost of an additional hotel night.

This will leave many teams struggling with the decision of putting a less than competitive team on the field Thursday or not coming to worlds at all.

It is FAR cheaper to stay in Mesquite. There is drinking in St George. There are a couple sports bars with in 5 miles of Canyons Commplex.

The hotels in St George are typically over $100 per night

Best of luck.

Brett ... The four-day format is solely in response to resolving issues of overall games demand vs. field/game slot availability, as impacted unfavorably by local league restrictions ... The sessions will be four days for all except Session #3, the Men's 40+ Masters and all Women's Divisions ... The dates by session are detailed above and on the tournament page ... Our intention is to NOT start bracket play on Day 1, which requires many teams to play early and not know for several hours while pool play concludes whether or not they are playing that evening, too ... We don't anticipate a disproportionate number of teams being eliminated on Friday ... Hotel utilization was not a factor in reaching this overall format structure change decision ... Good luck on the poker tables ...

Bill ... There will be a 2018 SoCal Championships, but that one, and a couple others, are still being negotiated as to location(s) and specific dates ... The 2018 Tournament schedule is an evolving process ... Our target date for release was mid-December, so we're still a bit ahead of that timeline for most major events ... Check the master tournaments page occasionally for updates ...

Dave

I figured on the schedule, but wanted to ask. I have a few guys on the team that are in union shops and they have to put their time off requests for 2018 in by early January.

While I understand the field issues in Vegas, I believe that there are going to be issues with teams having problems getting their players to commit to to taking 3 to 4 days off work for Worlds.

Play begins Thursday.. Managers meeting on Wednesday... and East Coast people leaving monday... the equates to 4 days off.

Dave pretty much explained the need to go to four days in Las Vegas ... it's VEGAS and 11 months away, I'm sure most people can get an extra day of vacation with this long of notice! It will be real nice not having to hang around for hours to see if we have to play a bracket game after the pool games are done.

Now, if we can get away from the local tournaments having us play on Fridays when there are only a handful of teams and none coming in from out of the area!

ric56 & r4pitch ... Agree with the 1 and 1 count!

Jawood (and RIK56 and r4pitch) ... When the National Rules Committee instituted the trial run with the 40-Masters this past season for the "1-1" count, it was structured to be consistent with other associations that employ it ... That means "1-1 count with no waste foul") ... Just to let you know so you're being careful what you ask for! ... It will undoubtedly be on the Committee Agenda in some form(s) later this month ...

Would prefer the 1 and 1 count WITH the foul ball, obviously, but we did not play a 7 inning game in Vegas. The 1 and 1 count allows approximately 10 more minutes of game action in the time allotted to play.

Hey, at least there would be plenty of cases of beer to drink if you went with the 1 & 1 with no foul ball! lol

Going to 1 and 1 to shorten the games ,then
Go to 4 days of tournament play lengthning the tournament costing us an extra day of hotels ,food , autos and more. Really doesn't make a lot of sense.

Come on Smooth01, we've been over this before .. the 1 and 1 count is not to shorten the games, it's to get more game action in the allotted time to play. In other words, players will be moving rather than standing!

Speaking for only myself of course, 4 days instead of 3 days for the tourney is not appealing at all. Being self employed another day from work will be very costly. Im not trying to be negative or bashing in anyway but only stating my personal view and the effect it will have. We discussed it this past weekend at our last tourney of fhe year. It will be an issue for a few others as well. Im all for the 1-1 count though, it would be nice to keep the game moving a little more and maybe get in a full 7 innings, which is rare.

Question, if seeding games are on Thursday now instead of Friday, could a team forfeit these games and take the bottom seed for the start of bracket play on Friday. Im not saying this would happen but only want to be informed if this question comes up and it is a problem having tje full squad there for all 4 days.

Rulebook §15.5TEAMS MUST PLAY SEEDING GAMES (page 75)

Teams must play in the round robin, or preliminary rounds, of the tournament to be eligible to play in the finals. At the discretion of the tournament director, teams not playing one or more round-robin, or seeding game, will be seeded last in the elimination bracket finals and will receive an automatic loss in that game, forcing them to the loser's bracket of the elimination rounds.

Ty Staff. Forfeiting seeding games isnt something anyone on our team would ever want to do anyway. Even if it was allowed without dropping into the elimination bracket the travel and expense of going to the Worlds and potentially only playing 3 games really isnt an option. I just want to be informed of what the rule is so when next year rolls around and we do a headcount, it will help in making a decision on whether we will be able to attend or not.
