Breaking in bats
What is happening to the bat during break in? It seems odd to me that a bat gets 'better' after it's been hit 100 times or so.

The bat is flexing more with each swing until it has a more resonant trampoline affect. Basically it is "loosening up" creating more flex at both the barrel and some in the handle to barrel area. Some of the inside is giving way to create this flex. The bat needs to be rotated each swing while breaking in to make the break in as equal as possible. Not rotating is supposed to make early breakage more prevelant and as it is stretching to break in it makes sense.

Good info Pete. I will be sure to do this with my new anti-virus. On another subject it was great to play with you and the others at the prison game during spring training. You had showed me your sun glasses but I forgot who you said made them and where to buy them. Let me know. Thanks David

The glasses are the Rudy Kerosene model. These are safety wrap around glasses as well as able to receive a rx insert (which I use). The lenses with different colors are interchangeable and have a lifetime replacement against scratching (exchange for $15). I use the Racing Red color as it is good in 90% of the conditions we play in. I have clear for night and yellow for overcast also. The Racing Red does NOT show a red cast it only intensifies and defines the surroundings. The color was designed for downhill skiers and competition biker riders and were used in the tour d France and by our olympic team (winter). I found the first pair through the web site Site for Sport Eyes in Washington and ordered through there for my 1st set. I then bought 2 other sets watching on ebay at a reduced price. I keep a second pair in my bag and jsut switch the inserts for night play. It makes it quicker and easier. The 3rd pair is a different frame color just for casual wear but I find myself wearing the same pair pretty much all the time.
It's my understanding you can have the inserts rx'd through Site for Sport eyes and by them as a stand alone and clip them into frames purchased elsewhere but for the initial purchse I got it all at one place. They have good instructions on their web site.
I have had the glasses hit twice by bad hop screamers and both times I'm convinced the glasses saved me from harm. All I felt was the glasses moved back and forward to cushion the blow.
It's good to hear from you. The prison game was a huge success. We'll have to do it again next year, see you then.
It was a cold day but Gary D had the answer for that in that mason jar! Whoa....

Back to the subject. Breaking in is only something you do with composite bats, aluminum bats don't need to be broken in, right? I've heard something about bat rolling machines. Are those used for breaking in bats?

On composites I do belive the only acceptable way to use and break in a composite bat is by hitting softballs. All other forms would fall under altering and again I belive would fall under the penalties associated with altering a bat. I have heard of incidences where rolling a bat can be detected because of the unevenness of the process. Here is my question batting practice is a good form of exercise along with keeping you and your manager out of the fishbowl associated with altering a bat. Here is my recommendation buy your bat from a known business, plenty of Batting Practice and your bats will behave well and legally. There is alot of good knowledge on this board on how many swings to put on a bat and then use for games only. There are balls specifically designed for todays bats and there are composites that will last for thousands of swings at a good price to use in your BP sessions.

DON'T get out early and hit water logged balls while taking your bp. Try and hit in weather at 60'F and warmer if at all possible.

There are some bat "doctors" out there, you can find them all over the web - - - - - but it's risky = not legal.......and it could ruin or at least shorten the life of your bat.
