April 28, 2018 Wayne 37 Men's 65 773 posts | Smoke, the first two you mentioned are dead ball awards. I'm looking for on a live ball. The third one is acceptable in two of the ways though. |

April 28, 2018 Wayne 37 Men's 65 773 posts | Dave, I will accept your answer as it pertains to a fair batted ball. What would be the other two? |
April 28, 2018 B.J. 1106 posts | as soon as it is hit |
April 28, 2018 DaveDowell Men's 70 4315 posts | We'll feed these one at a time to see if anyone else jumps in! ... Here's another: When a defensive player throws his glove (or other equipment) at a fly ball and it makes contact with the ball in the air, whether or not the ball is ultimately caught ... |
April 28, 2018 B.J. 1106 posts | yes but then it becomes as wayne says.. awarded bases (3) or 4 if the umpire thinks it would have cleared the fence |
April 28, 2018 DaveDowell Men's 70 4315 posts | Agreed, B.J. ... But my answer is correct and completely responsive to the original specific question as asked ... That's part of the fun in these "stump the ump" exercises ... What happens next is usually a minor "tweak" to the question because either [1] it wasn't the exact question the poster intended or [2] it was overly vague to begin with, or both! ... |
April 28, 2018 DaveDowell Men's 70 4315 posts | B.J ... And here's another correct answer to the question as asked ... On ANY fly ball hit with two outs ... The ½-inning at bat ends if the ball is caught OR the runner(s) keep going if it isn't ... |
April 28, 2018 Wayne 37 Men's 65 773 posts | Since you can't answer the question, I'll give you the answer. 1) A batted ball that lands in fair territory that isn't caught. 2) A batted ball that is touched over fair territoy while is in the air and runner tags 3) A batted ball over foul territory where the runner tags up when the ball is caught. |
April 28, 2018 DaveDowell Men's 70 4315 posts | Plus the other three I mentioned, all of which you may be able to slide into one of your three generic descriptions! ... LOL! |
April 28, 2018 Wayne 37 Men's 65 773 posts | B.J. writes: yes but then it becomes as wayne says.. awarded bases (3) or 4 if the umpire thinks it would have cleared the fence. And if you judge the ball would have cleared the fence you would award 4 bases, but I can't judge if a runner standing and not moving when they have every opportunity to do so is not interference.............hmmm. One of those 4 base awards that slipped past ya earlier. |
April 29, 2018 B.J. 1106 posts | lmao wayne you just wont give up.. the difference in the 4 base award for a ball that could have cleared the fence if not hit with a thrown glove is that IT'S THE RULE .. also again as far as with a runner standing on the bag and not moving THE RULE SAYS HE DOES NOT HAVE TO MOVE.. if you dont like the rule as it is written you have a couple of choices.. 1) stop playing and umpiring SSUSA 2) find out from Dave when and where the next rules convention is and go and state your case.. who knows maybe they will re-write the rule |
April 30, 2018 txnighttrain 120 posts | Just remember, you can tag up when the ball is first touched, not when the catch is completed. This actually happened. Line drive hits pitchers glove over his head and carries to outfield. Runner was standing on second when ball was first touched. Runner takes off. The ball is caught and the defense appealed the runner leaving too soon. They lost the appeal because the runner was on base at the first touch of a live ball by the defense. |

They may put themselves in jeopardy of being off the bag when the ball is pitched and being called out or by being off the bag when a ball is caught and putting themselves in an appeal situation. Yes, these actually happen. The runner is not constrained by a rule, but he may suffer the consequences of his choice to advance at the wrong time. I say he because we girls never do that...or do we? |
April 30, 2018 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | Yes, BJ, or by being off the bag and being tagged of course. I really appreciate your common sense approach. Some people just complicate things for no logical reason. |
