Courtesy Runner on field before Time Out
What is the umpire's call when a would-be courtesy runs on the playing field before the umpire calls time out, i.e. the ball is still in play? Is it interference? Is someone called out? Who? What rule applies?

In my case, the batter hit the ball to the outfield and was safe at first with no other runners. The third base coach ran onto the field calling that he would be the courtesy runner before the ball was back in the infield.

Jerry, unless the c/r caused some confusion allowing another runner to advance or score I would have no call.. but I would also tell the manager/coach to make sure time had been called in the future.. if the c/r running out to early did allow a runner to advance I would send the runner back unless I thought the defense had a chance at making a play then I would have interference and call the runner out that in my judgement might have been thrown out

Actually I have had more potential issues with a runner stepping off the bag before I call time. Fortunately senior moments or courtesy kept the defense from tagging them out. In my games to slow them down and make sure that I know who is who, I make the players tell me what number is replacing what number. I want their heads to stay in the situation, and if I hear the same number twice as a courtesy runner than inning, I have an out as soon as he touches the bag. Also after having been a scorekeeper for Coachie for over 20 years, I know that a thorough scorekeeper wants that information too...just in case on their opponents.

But you have to tip your cap to the 3B coach for buying into the concept of having his CR "ready to go" before the first pitch to the next batter! [grins]

Dave, it's hard to tip your cap when your ponytail is through the back. I totally agree with you. As you know our team had a scorekeeper that tried to keep those boys in line and ready. It's too bad that every team does not have that. In this situation it would've also been nice if the base coach had the concept of being ready as a 1B coach instead. You know what I say when they go across the field for any reason during a live ball situation, "Playing through". Yes, my vocals are hard to ignore.
