Brickyard
Brickyard was first tournament of the year for me. I loved the 1-1 starting count. I hated the $3 admission.

1-1 count dissenters triggered.....

Admission fees are tricky. We pay $5 (or maybe more now) to get in to play at BLD's out west. It gets fun when your wife and others join you for a tournament (need a second mortgage). With that said, I love playing at nicer venues and not afraid of occasionally paying fees if it means the facilities are great. Paying the entrance fee sometimes doesn't even guarantee the fields are kept up-- some BLD's (Riverside) are not so great, but they still stick it to you at the gate. I have no idea how good the fields were at your particular tourney- hopefully better than most given the fee you paid.

SSUSA I am assuming have no control what local parks charge. I am sure they will weigh in.

maskedman ... We're minor accomplices in what you liked ... As for what you didn't, this may make you smile ... About 10± years ago, I was at the Midwest Sports Complex as the T.D. for the Brickyard event ... They were charging the $3 entry fee in Session #1 (65+ and older) despite the "Park Rules" on the entrance marquee sign that said "Seniors over 65 Free" ... I had to leave to get a replacement water jug at Home Depot, so I stopped by the park office on the way out and asked the manager to fix that because I was getting eaten up by angry ball players ... He said he'd take care of it, so I left to run the errand ... Came back about 20 minutes later, and the problem was solved! ... He put a swatch of duct tape over the part about "Seniors Free", completely covering it, and kept right on charging! ... I guess he DID solve the problem, but it wasn't quite in the manner I had hoped! ... At least it's good to know they've held the $3 line on inflation since then, though ...

I have played at brickyard for past seven years and this year you can tell this tournament has went down hill imo no water in dugouts , weeds all over the fields, no shirts , nasty AstroTurf piled up everywhere , trash behind the fences , long lines at concessions , and a couple of umpires were just plain bad had one umpire ask me what was an illiegal pitch. Had fun playing and will go back because it's in my backyard but really just some observations.

Actually, if I were to tell you how much they charge for other events to get in, you would really be surprised what people pay. Fortunately 65+ have not been charged to get in for several years, but I do not think that it was a conscious effort to not charge them. We just didn't remind the park that there were teams coming in those days. Dave, you know that is one of the best stories of all time. The one thing though about Midwest is the $3 is part of how they pay for that awesome grounds crew. Fortunately this year they did not have the battles that they have had the last couple, but when it rains they are super heroes.

I know that Victory Lane in Arizona also has a gate fee, and it was used for seniors before. It was a very nice facility when I was there. Private parks are usually better maintained. Most of the ones here in Indy are private parks; so we are used to paying those fees.

I actually never heard one complaint about the 1-1 count.

BIGHURT, there were water jugs on the bleachers. There were not enough in the park to put one in each dugout, but the grounds crew and park manager kept filling them. There is a new owner, and I am letting him know your concerns. I think that he will be the best thing that has happened for the park in years. He did open up the Tiki Hut in the back for concessions, and he had 2 people working the downstairs when the previous owner only ever had 1 person. We gave the person that has made the shirts for the prior 18 years the team names, and he just did not do it. Had we known that he would not, other arrangements would have been made. The astro turf was part of a really bad plan, and it bothered me too. I am pretty sure which umpire you are describing. He will not be working any games for senior softball in the future. The park owner said that he appreciates the feedback and hopes that you will see positive changes next year. That will be the 20th Brickyard.
