Cancel the darn tournament, you know is going to rain the entire weekend. So what if you as an organization loose few $$$. Do what is right for your clients. My 2 cents.

Paco12, unfortunately we will have to drive down, knowing that the extended forecast is calling for rain on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, which is somewhat understandable, because things could actually change and the tournament could be completed, not likely thought. But don't drag the tournament out just to keep the entry fees and the hotel money. If it's raining on your play day and the forecast is calling for rain, do the right thing...

I tried to get someone on the phone to discuss the up coming weather and I was told that they don't give out tournament directors phone numbers. They also said, you have to show up on game day to get your decision.. What kind of bullshit is that?! Drive 4 hours and get charged for rooms you don't need only to be told the tournament is cancelled because you don't give out Directors phone numbers!!!!

It seems pretty simple to me

1) Check the weather forecast for today and the fields. If it is currently raining to make the fields unplayable, that's an issue.
2) Check the weather forecast for Thursday and the fields. If it is raining on Thursday, thereby making the fields unplayable, after two straight days of rain, that's an issue.

If after one or two days of rain and the extended weather forecast is calling for rain on Friday and Saturday(which it currently is), then there are a lot of issues and the tournament should be cancelled..

Unless you know a director personally, you are not getting any numbers. Call one of the local colleges to see if it's raining down there. For example;Potomac College Herndon or University of Phoenix Northern Virginia Campus or George Mason University to determine if they are playing any of their sporting event...

You talked to me ATP and that's not what you were told ... You're certainly entitled to quote me because I am comfortable with what I say ... But there is an implied obligation on your part to quote me accurately ... You didn't ... You were told ...

• We do not give out Director personal phone numbers (you got that one right);
• We are 2,700 miles from the tournament site and do not have accurate weather information to make any decision;
• We would send your name and cell phone number to all three Directors (already done)
• We do NOT cancel an event based on a forecast and our policy is that "All play/no-play decisons are made at the fields of play at game time";
• We at no time told you that you had to show up ... You only have to do that if you want to be there when play commences ...

Calls to ALL Session #2 managers are being made now ... They are being advised to be present and ready to play 30 miunutes prior to YOUR scheduled game time, and that THE TOURNAMENT HAS NOT BEEN CANCELED at this time (1:00 PM EDT)

DD...my bad...I just figured if I didn't have a phone number, I needed to show up. Either way, I have to spend money on a hotel unless you can give teams 4, 5, or 6 hours notice so they can get there on time, game day.

We’ve played the last two days and the fields were in excellent shape. Kudos have to be given to the grounds crew. Apparently, the games for today, Thursday, are cancelled, but the last two days, were great playing days.

I have been told that all games for today have been cancelled. My app shows that starting at 8:00 AM, there is an 80 % chance of rain.. So now one day is "lost", which means the most likely way to get everything in is to go to five innings games. Of course that will only work, if there isn't any more rain and my app show rain for today, Friday and Saturday...

Cookie - Not sure what your intent is with this post. Anyone who has a smart phone or a computer knows the weather does not look good for this weekend and post above you says games were cancelled today. That said, I will be getting on the road later this am for at least 5 hrs (weather traffic permitting) to get to Loudoun and attend the managers meeting to see what their thoughts are. If you are the manager and attend, you will know first hand, if not, hopefully your manager will communicate that to your team like I will to mine. Truly sux but as the saying goes "it is what it is", especially when you have a big tourney like this, been this way for years! Good luck to all, safe travels and hopefully we get to play and no one gets hurt.

I disagree. . . You have to know by now if you will be postponing the bracket play for Friday at the very least. Giving this info will at least save teams from wasting money on Hotels for Tonight. Tomorrow is calling for 2" of rain and heavy thunderstorms are possible tonight. It's pretty obvious that Tomorrow will be a wash!! Luckily some Hotels are giving until 3pm today to cancel tonight's rooms as an Exception. Due to the Preakness this Weekend Hotels are all sold out so they need to know by 3 or we will be charged. Please out of common courtesy do the right thing and give an Update for friday before 3.

New schedules were handed out, your coach should have gotten a call with your start time. Brambleton complex not being used so 50AAA are at Philip Bolen and 55 Platinum/Gold are at Potomac Lake Sportsplex (these fields are in better shape and now Parks can use the extra maint guys to help on the 2 complexes in play). There is a single play in game for seeding then straight double elim. New brackets are being worked on and will be at the fields tomorrow. IF there are any issues at the fields in the am (i.e. they are not ready to be played on), TD will call teams in order of their games. IF YOU ARE NOT CALLED, BE AT THE FIELD READY TO PLAY 30 MINS BEFORE GAME TIME. Also, DO NOT USE the Parks call Number in for weather delays, decisions are being made by TD at the fields.

At Philip Bolen, 50AAA had the 1 play in and 2 elim games (yes, we played 3 games, fields not great by the 3rd game). Think they started at Potomac but rained heavier there, all play has been suspended today, they are working on contingency plans as we speak!

Drove 7 hours to be told our game was cancelled today due to field conditions which I predicted last night. It rained most of the day today and it will rain all night into the early morning. (As I just watched the full weather report on the news). Our team was just told 9AM game tomorrow morning. I do not expect the field conditions to be any better in the AM if not worse but hey try to squeeze in the only age group that has not played yet so you can keep the $535. What a bunch of money hungry people at SSUSA!!! I am beyond disappointed with the actions and planning with this association. You have inconvenienced many players trying to drag this tournament along. It is an absolute disgrace and you people should be ashamed!! Oh the best part we were told 1 pool game into single elimination bracket. Do we get half our money back for possibly playing half the games?? Lastly, please have the common decency to notify teams first thing in the AM if fields are u playable...

In all my years of softball I have never met a bigger bunch of inconsiderate people. To drag this tournament out is absolutely hysterical. I personally have not seen the fields however I will take a guess and say they can not be good let alone safe for play. For players to keep incurring travel costs is an ignorant mindset by SSUSA. If the tournament is cancelled we would not have to spend money on another night for hotel costs and salvage what is left back home with family.

Add the 55s as not playing a single game.I've seen the fields and no way will they be playable tomorrow. Cancel the tournament and refund or credit the teams there money. I do have a question for SSUSA would you be liable for any injuries encored playing on a unfit field. Some will say just don't play but then you forfeit your entry fee.Jmo.

I must say it was insane that this tournament wasn’t cancelled. We played 2- 5 inning games with a 40 min time limit in extremely poor weather and field conditions. The grounds crew did all they could but it was ridiculous. I personally saw 2 guys loose their hat while swinging, guys were slipping and falling all over. We all want to play, if we didn’t we still wouldn’t be at this age. But most of us have to go back to work and support our families and to risk injury in these playing conditions is crazy. Is the money made running this more important ?? When you start loosing teams willing to continue signing up for these tournaments will it be all worth it, Reputation is everything
Safe trip home to ALL,

This may not be the appropriate thread to pose a request for opinions and I don’t intend to “hijack” it, but it seems relevant to the discussion, as it deals with Loudoun and “rainouts.’ Dave will correct me if it isn’t. Situation: A four team bracket in which the four teams each played each other in the seeding games. One team went 3-0, while the other three went 1-2, respectively. Appropriately, in the bracket, the 3-0 team took the number 1 seed and played the number 4 seed (1-2), while the numbers 2 (1-2) and 3 (1-2) seeded teams played each other. No complaint at this point, as this has been the rule since we started softball so long ago. “The rest of the story.” Number 4 seed defeats the number 1 seed in the bracket (number 1 seed is now 3-1, number 4 seed is now 2-2 overall). Number 2 seed defeats the number 3 seed (number 2 seed is now 2-2, number 3 seed is now 1-3 overall). Number 2 seed defeats number 4 seed (number 2 seed is now 3-2, number 4 seed is now 2-3 overall). Number 1 seed defeats number 3 seed in the losers bracket (number 1 seed is now 4-1, number 3 seed is now 1-4 overall). All teams have played the requisite 5 games. Remainder of the tournament is cancelled because of rain. Final standings: number 2 seed, at 3-2, is declared the winner; number 4 seed, at 2-3, is declared the runner up, while; number 1 seed, at 4-1, is given third place. All is according to the proverbial “hoyle.” May I get some opinions about this. Nothing shady going on, but…. In a situation in which there are fewer than six teams, would it not be more relevant to have all the games count, as in a “round robin” formant? The number of games played would be the same – or less if no “if” game – so the cost to SSUSA would be unchanged. Opinions?

Player - IMO (and since I am sitting in a hotel hoping to play tomorrow), the final standings is correct. Seedings don't mean ANYTHING once the elim starts. You lost your first game which puts you in LB, you would have played the #4 again in LB Final, winner would have to beat #2 twice Since the #4 seed beat you in elim, they finish ahead of you, record would ONLY matter IF you didn't get to play ANY elim games, pretty simple actually!

Again, my opinion (which you asked for) :-)

Also, I think you should have started a new thread, ,this one is specifically for players who are not happy with what is CURRENTLY going on here (IMO)! LOL

So let’s summarize the weekend with facts:

a) the extended forecast called for rain on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with some reports being up too 2 inches of rain throughout the weekend
b) On Friday, we made the field for game time at 9:30, four fields there, two of them were being worked on by the county department crew (the county crew did a tremendous job and made a great effort to get the two fields ready to play by putting bags, bags, bags, bags, bags of Diamond Tex? on the fields) they got two fields ready and those games started
c) Our field, I watched the crew put approximately 30 bags on the field and they got it ready to play. The pathways between first and second, second and third were soft…..the outfield had water everywhere….
d) we played two innings before it started raining again
e) the tournament director called us off the field in the fourth inning…
f) no games were played from on Friday from like 11:00 AM on
g) no games played on Saturday
h) SSUSA however, says they have a plan
i) everyone wastes their time and money at the hotel
j) then for Sunday, they want to probably go to single elim. I say single elimination because of the time
constraints but I haven't heard anything official yet.
k) SSUSA plan is for any teams that doesn't play three games, they are going to give you a $100 credit

From the very beginning of play starting on Thursday, this tournament was a complete and udder train wreck. SSUSA should have cancelled the tournament from the start but no they made the call from California. At least the tournament director did the right thing by calling the players off of the field on Friday. On Friday, with the field conditions and the forecast for the rest of the weekend, the tournament should have been cancelled. On Saturday, with no games played and the forecast, SSUSA should have cancelled the tournament but no, all the way from California, they had a plan to probably play a single elimination tournament on Sunday.

I personally spoke with about 25 players, some from Rhode Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, who felt that it was wrong for SSUSA not to cancel the tournament from the very beginning. SSUSA's complete dismissal of the facts, input from players and the forecast(s) tells me either that they are stupid or that they don’t care, perhaps both…SSUSA got their money but they lost a lot of respect from their customers this weekend..

Reid - I rec'd a call at 9am that the schedule was being pushed until tomorrow (after receiving a call from Don Brooks at 6:30am that our 10am was being pushed back and I would get another call by noon on the schedule). So communication from that stand point was very good. I will make one correction to Cookie in that SSUSA President Terry Hennessy is here so decisions are being made here (IMO) though the call I rec'd last night was from CA.

Our expected schedule is 1 play in to single elim (2 game guarantee). The question is, how many teams have dropped? Quite a few from what I understand and I have heard that we will get an updated schedule later today (5:30 is what I heard). We as a team voted to stay so I decided to drive and look at the fields, they are not in great shape so not sure how they will get them ready to play tomorrow am (no one has worked on the ones I drove to which was Potomac and same for Bolen which another teammate was already at). I have heard they are a very good crew, they will need to be! :-)

And of course to make things a little more complicated it was starting to rain a little again on the way back and forecast is calling for some more t-storms late tonight (maybe why they didn't try and work on them?). Not sure how they expect to get this in but we will be ready if they try and hope no one gets hurt if they decide to try and play it.

I used the "it is what it is" earlier in this thread because I truly believe you can't call tourneys based on the forecast (even if it proved correct), I can only hope that SSUSA does the right thing and not let us play if the fields are not safe (exactly what bucs15 said).

Good luck to all!

So far I have made two predictions (the first before leaving NY and the 2nd last night) and both have been correct. I made a 3rd today which I will not share until tomorrow. Again SSUSA should be ashamed, which I know they are not and have proven this over the past two days. IMO this is no better than stealing. Yes you heard me correct SSUSA is stealing $535 from teams that have not played 1 single game. Teams who have traveled to Virginia, taken tome off from work and paid for hotels then deciding it was in the best interest of the team to return home after ZERO PROGRESS has been made in 3 days. Lastly, I am in absolute shock the SSUSA President is in Loudoun and can not see the amount of rain that has fallen let alone the field conditions.

mck71 i originally agreed with you too. But when they said they were pushing the entire 40 tourney to Sunday my team voted to go home. Financially we would be spending over 700.00 in rooms, plus food and drink and most importantly time. If fields are ready tomorrow have the age brackets that started finish. 40s should have been cancelled. 2 game min. for a TOC berth - not right. Tim has a tourney already scheduled for Sept. Have that be the TOC for 40s. Easy fix and plenty of time to make arrangements. The fact that they did not cancel it today was what changed "it is what it is." I wrote an email to George and would love to hear how he and SSUSA responds. If it is "our policy is to not refund teams that back out after the deadline" is what they are going to say - well that is disappointing. We were there - took off work and made a 6 hour drive. Hopefully someone will make this right.

Now I can say my third prediction was correct. SSUSA has ZERO intent on playing games. They knew the fields were unplayable. They deliberately kept telling teams the tournament was still on to see how many teams would drop so they could keep entry fee money. NOW THAT IS AN ABSOLUTE CRIME!! SSUSA JUST STOLE A TON OF MONEY!! I am no lawyer but I sure hope a player is and can enlighten the rest of us to see if teams have any recourse against SSUSA for dragging this tournament on to STEAL $535 from teams who decided to drop out for all the right reasons. SSUSA will be getting a letter from me with a rental car, hotel bill and other associates expenses for this past weekend for reimbursement. These people that run this association need to see how much money WE as players spend. SSUSA you have disrespected the players and your leadership should definitely be questioned moving forward. Safe travels to the rest of the players in Loudoun!!

Kudos to Mike Santo of Promotion softball for getting us out of this train wreck.I know you can't control the weather but you can certainly look at the weather forecast and see what was coming for the next few days. In this era of weather forecasting, they are usually spot on. I look at the weather channel and it says rain starting at 845, I'll be damned if it doesn't start raining at 845. I know its a tough call because of the Chamber of Commerce, hotels, restaurants etc. I'm just glad we made that call to not go. I actually worked for four days, made some money and will be able to walk on MOnday morning without added pain . lol See you at the next one. Mac3b

I understand toe work and cost that goes into putting a tournament together like this ans of course Mother Nature didn't co-operate at all but the entrance fee should refunded or be applied somewhere else down the line at a minimum if SSUSA could secure another weekend during the year somewhere even if different age groups played different locations. You cannot penalize teams because the product promised was not provided in any form. Let's not forget the costs uncured by the players who ultimately pay their own way to attend. I am certain the SSUSA office will come up with a solution that rectifies this lost weekend. For the future, do something about your policy of cancellations as a number or teams and mamagers pleaded with you to do the right thing way BEFORE their predictions came true.

first off there is not much I can say that hasn't been said already, we should have never been told to play on these fields in the condition that they were in but the ssusa director told us we would forfeit the game and go straight to the looser bracket, and as a result of us playing we had 2 guys get hurt 1 out for the rest of this year and the other out for a month or so ,we had to pull out of the tournament because of the injuries to our players. ssusa doesn't care about the players SAFETY at all,its all about the $$$$$$$$ to them !!!!!. this is ABSOLUTELY unacceptable !!!!! I can tell you one thing for sure if they don't give us a credit towards a future tournament we are not going to play in anymore of there tournaments !!!

So I basically drove 3 hours round-trip, half way there, for nothing! It all goes back to my original discussion with DD from California. this situation happened a few yrs ago with an October Tourney in Virginia beach....we never saw the fields and drove 12 hours and spent hundreds for hotel, travel and food PLUS registration fee of $500+.....we were told we would not get refunded our entry fee but after considerable arguing and correspondence, we got entry into next season's first SSUSA tourney in Virginia in April.....it was in 40's temperature-wise but we played at least and got some type of reimbursement.....weather is very tricky but there should be a system in place that can prevent long travel and expense if future forecasts don't look promising.....a refund or new entry into a tourney of choice should be the least of concessions offered to a team...we heard that the tourney was going to lose money on pre-made T-shirts with dates etc but there are ways around that next time, don't date your material.....otherwise, I hope we all learn something from this so it doesn't happen in the future...but it probably will...I don't envy their position

There is no way to make everyone happy I understand the aggrevation. But We had a tournament scheduled this weekend. Not a softball but a baseball. Which is affected more by rain than softball.
Weather predictions Friday 80% rain Saturday 80% rain Sunday 50% rain \prediction up to 3 inches ,all teams were calling and asking to call tournament off.

Friday no rain played Friday games, Saturday a little mist around 10am never stopped playing. Sunday sunny until 3:oo pm then had the 2 inches of rain that was predicted.
This just an example why Tournament directors can not go strickly by the weather prediction.
Had he cancelled and the weather had been good can you imagine how many people would be on the message board critizing. The tournament director is in a no win situation.

The other side of the story is that SSUSA is still respnsible for field rentals, travel, awards, some umpires travel, etc. So to expect 100% refund for something that they had no control over (RAIN) is really a bit unrealistic. A percentage of the "break even" may be a more doable ask for.

titanhd - I completely understand your logic about expenses but just so I am clear, you are saying that if we didn't play 1 inning and were there for the whole tourney after being told that IF we leave we wouldn't get any refund (so we stayed) we don't deserve a full refund?

It's a business and the product is the game. You purchased a product that was not delivered.

If you bought softballs from our company and the container did not get delivered on time which is out of our control, we have no right to keep the money.

I know it is a tough situation on all sides and I'm sure the will be resolve to all of this, you just may have to be patient.

I still don't believe they played. Look at the Pictures. Not 1 teams Uniforms have an ounce of dirt/mud on them. Was there a coin flip on who stayed? Were the pictures taken to avoid giving any money back? I'm sorry but with the way the fields were on Saturday basically under water no way anyone's uniforms would have been clean. Even guys in shorts dont have an ounce of dirt on their legs or cleats. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

i can't expect a refund of hotel, food, travel, rental cars, but i would expect a refund or transfer of registration to next optional tourney.....that is fair I believe to most.....the town got their hotels rented, their food eaten and some cars rented...the malls got business and probably some extra clothing was purchased so it would seem fair for a little bit compensation but only in the form of future tourneys entry fees

Duffy7 I went out to watch the games at Bolen and was thinking the conditions would be horrible, but after the first game or two the fields were actually in great conditions and they were dragging the fields in between some games, by the end you wouldn't have known that it rained all last week.

I was told if you left the tourney you get nothing that was on Saturday. We play a 3 inning game on Friday till the DPW of LOUDON came and shut down the fields they said it was to dangerous to play, This was at Potomac lake complex. I was pitching my foot came out of my spikes because of the suction from all the mud I was ankle deep. Look this tournament should have been cancelled from the get go.We were told Friday a wash out be there at 8 am sat ready to play got a call at 6;30 am told pushed back 4 hrs.got another call at 8.00 am telling me that no games will be played on Saturday washed out told me to be ready at 8.00am sunday best of 3 with the only team in our bracket said are you sure it going to rain they told me we will get them in call sunday morning at 630 am from the director telling me tourney cancelled no games now we would have went home because we knew it was not going to happen no matter how much you wish it did. They could have save the players lots of money players could have saved vacation days for another tournament instead of wasting them sitting in a hotel. SO HERE IS MY QUESTION they said no refund after deadline I didn't receive the product I paid for so I should get a refund on the entry fees also the SSUSA WEBSITE READS UNDER TOURNAMENT FORMAT---- FIVE GAMES MINIMUM SCHEDULED WITH ROUND ROBIN INTO DOUBLE ELIMINATION OR ----THREE GAME [GUARANTEE] I HAVE NOT GOTTEN EITHER SO THEY DID NOT DELIVER
