We have played and do play SSUSA/ISSA/ISA/SPA There is also Florida Half Century, and ASA/NSA/USSSA do limited events with seniors too Its basically the entire alphabet different arcs of the ball, foul ball and home run rules, 1-1 and 0-0 counts, two strike foul balls allowed and not allowed, the list goes on and on. we just make sure we ask the ump before we start any tourney game |
| July 26, 2018 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | There was an association out of Iowa, SSWS, when Coachie started playing, but I believe that the head of the association passed away. I have not seen anything about them in years. I had heard that Herb Oliver who founded SPA was trying to put something together also but have not seen anything on that in a while either. There are also the Huntsman Games and some states have Senior Olympics that all include softball. FHC as already mentioned and some other states have local association tournaments. Because of Coachie, I have been involved with senior softball in many capacities for 21 years, and SSUSA has always had the best product even though we played in others. Bob Mitchell and Terry Hennessy and their staffs have built a real quality product over the years. SSUSA has the largest senior tournaments. caryp33, maybe you could come visit us at the Brickyard in Indy next year. We are right next door to you. |
| July 26, 2018 Omar Khayyam 1357 posts | Northern California Senior Softball Association is another association only for seniors. They scheduled 39 tournaments for 2018, so there is a tournament somewhere most weekends, although some are occasionally canceled due to a rainout or lack of teams. There are no individual memberships and there are 98 registered teams so far this season. Teams can pick up a player for a tournament from anywhere, irrespective of the player's ability. Tournaments are not based on age (with the exception of the extra fielder allowed for older teams), but rather all teams are ranked and play within their group, or nearby groups with handicaps given. The tournament fees are around $300 with a five game minimum, and most are weekend only. SSUSA rules are the guidelines with a few exceptions posted for each year after SSUSA rules are out. The frequency of tournaments gives teams an advantage when playing in SSUSA or SPA tournaments. |
| July 26, 2018 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | Omar, I started thinking about the state associations. So after FHC, LVSSA came to mind, but I then realized that the list was getting longer, and he did say near Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri. So I abandoned that path. |
| July 27, 2018 DoubleL10 Men's 70 907 posts | Nancy, you are correct about the SSWS. Ken Maas started the association and passed away in the mid-2000s. His son, Greg, ran it for a year or so before it folded. The Maas's ran a great tournament. |
| July 27, 2018 OZ40 549 posts | Carpy, Played in ISA in Indy before and no, no association card is needed, just a license or other positive ID. Nice tournament, good competition and friendly administrators, (even sold me a couple dozen new balls at tournament end.) PS. Nice complex too. |

We never participated in one. I think Herb's new venture was called Heartland. OZ40, the Brickyard is in Indy. The ISA is in Columbus. Both are excellent tournaments. |
