| Aug. 22, 2018 Wayne 37 Men's 65 773 posts | Proper Appeal The rule book tells what you can and when you can appeal. However I can't find anything, unless I've overlooked it, how to make a proper appeal. Anyone in the Peanut Gallery know where it might be? |

| Aug. 22, 2018 txnighttrain 120 posts | There are two ways to make an appeal: First a live ball appeal: Throw to the base you want to make the appeal at, tell the umpire which runner and what you are appealing. Second a dead ball appeal: This is after the umpire has called time. Wait until the umpire puts ball back in play (tells or signals the pitcher to pitch). Tell umpire what base you are appealing, which runner and what you are appealing. (EX: I am appealing the runner who was on first for missing second base). You don't need to throw to the base. There are misc types of appeals like a person batting out of order, and courtesy runner violations. Batting out of order can only be appealed after the person who is batting out of order has completed his at bat. If you say something before that, then the person who was supposed to bat can assume his proper position in the batters box and he assumes the count of the wrong batter. Regarding a courtesy runner, you must wait until wrong runner gets on base and then appeal. Once he steps on, there is no going back. |
| Aug. 22, 2018 Wayne 37 Men's 65 773 posts | Now you've confused me with the dead ball appeal when you say the umpire has to make the ball live again. Aren't you able just to make a verbal appeal after he makes the ball dead? Reason I asked was because I was playing 3B the other night and the batter flew out to right center. Runner on 1B left early for 2B as I watched him leave early. The ball got thru the infield and I picked it up and was walking toward the pitchers mound. I was yelling at him for the appeal. The umpire did call time because he had his back turned putting up the out on the scoreboard. When he decided to turn back around I told he what I was doing and threw the ball to 1B. The runner then took off to third. He told our catcher he never called time. He hadn't a clue what an appeal was he called one of our runners out on appeal after he called time. Later on the same runner barreled over the SS as he was fielding the ball and he never called anything. |
