Results of Las Vegas
Just my 2 cent but why can SSUSA post the final scores or the the top 3, it takes them so long to do it & I sure everyone would like to know who is winning. ISSA is doing a pretty good job in doing it why the others association can do it.

Thank you Tim M who directed 60AAA, you did a great job keeping everyone up to date as the tournament went on and finished. Really appreciated knowing how some of my friends teams were doing. Still don't get what is so hard at a minimum to take a picture of the brackets at the end of each day and post by the directors that are there. SSUSA biggest tournament of the year with over 600 team you would think they would want update players. OH well this post will probably be pull off like the other one.

This past weekend in Secession 1, 55 MP played both Pool Play and Bracket play with only one umpire and no scoreboards. I do not know if the other divisions only had 1 ump per field.

First, Congrats to Tim McElroy on the outstanding job he did in posting the information for others to see. Tim that was awesome and it’s a shame that others have put in you situation that you had to do that, especially when there are other viable and doable options.

I posted a message a few days, which SSUSA deleted. In that post, I criticized SSUSA for not having the scores and the brackets updated for the biggest tournament of the year. A business charges over $700 for an entry fee into their biggest tournament of the year and then act like children when someone criticizes them.

As I was following the board in Las Vegas, I wasn’t the only one who had issues with the scores and brackets not being updated. Sadly, someone has
dug their heels into the sand and are showing that it’s only going to be my way and the heck with the paying customers. This score and bracket updating has been a two year situation with SSUSA with scores and brackets, we have heard plenty of excuses from the organization, including taking pictures of the bracket and sending it to your friends..
About a year ago, we were told that things were in the works and that changes would becoming, clearly we were lied to. Hmmmm, if only SSUSA would listen to their customer base and stop with the excuse that no one is buying.

As our tournament ended, I stopped by and congratulated the SSUSA representatives who were there on a fine tournament BUT that
the fact that the scores and brackets weren’t being updated for their biggest tournament of the year was a disgrace…..

There are pros and cons of open-source solutions or proprietary software. Proprietary software has been a popular but open-source solutions can have an advantage. Proprietary solutions I.e., SSUSA) have a number of disadvantages that should be considered.

One of the biggest drawbacks of any proprietary software is the licensing fee – is SSUSA paying for this? Developers often sell their products, they charge for access to their product, and the license fees can be substantial. Open-source software, on the other hand, is generally cheaper than proprietary options, and in some cases may be available for use at no cost. The cost of training and support may partially offset this advantage.

With the use of proprietary software, SSUSA is reliant on the developer for all updates, support, and fixes. Updates may be slow (or non-existent) and it may take some time to address security holes or other problems. In addition, if the developer leaves, retires, or passes, SSUSA may have no further updates or support. Open-source software, on the other hand, may have a number of different teams working on the code at once, and anyone can pick up a discontinued project and expand on it since the source code is public.

Open-source software is typically patched to address security threats faster than proprietary programs, simply due to the source code’s availability to the public. With many eyes searching for loopholes, potential threats become obvious quickly. Proprietary software systems rely on the developer to identify problems, or worse, security loopholes discovered in the wild. Some proprietary developers notoriously rely on “security through obscurity”, attempting to quash information about security weaknesses to prevent outsiders from using it.

Open-source software generally offers more customization options than proprietary systems. In many cases, what you see is what you get with a proprietary software package; you simply license it as is. With open-source programs, there may be many different customized versions of the same software -- if not, a version cab be tailored to the needs or create one using the program’s source code.

your talking about a bracket not anything else they are free online and it does not take a software to update it or going into any other software. i was a director for a tournament company for some years the hardest thing to do was collect the money without that in the directors way life is easier granted there are hard times at a tournament and hard things to deal with i get it.

I have been supporting SSUSA since 2012 when I started playing Senior Ball. Updating the tournament results has always been an issue and is complained about every year. I love what Dave does and understand the size and magnitude of creating schedules and brackets for 600+ teams but his excuses of being the only person who knows how to use the software is growing old. Dave, you need to train someone else how to use it so all of these schedules and brackets don't fall on 1 person. You also need to have it updated to report games scores in realtime. A year or so ago you talked about using software for game updates but we haven't heard anything since then. I want to commend Tim McElroy for at least seeing the need for the SSUSA members to have updated scores and posting updates during the day, Tim, you make the other Field Directors look bad. Sorry Dave, you need to get some new and updated software.

This is so simple, my 10 year old great nephew can do it.

Copy the brackets on an open PDF so you can fill in the names and then post back on the web page just as it is done with the blank bracket.

As I stated before and was erased doesn't take a brain surgeon.

I think SSUSA can get a local college kid and pay him $200.00 per session just to keep it up during the Vegas Nationals.

Let's see if my math work here 623 teams X $745.00 per team entrance

$464,135.00

5 sessions at $200.00 per session = $1,000.00

leaving $463,135.00 for other expenses.

so $1,000.00 keeping your membership happy seems like a pretty good invest me to me.

I hope someone else can agree.

By the way don't tell me that a lot more expenses are incurred.

I know that, but at the end of the day I am sure $1,000.00 does not hurt at all.

Take a picture of the bracket at end of the session and post it on the message board (facebook or anywhere). Cost = $0 and goes up right away!!! This is not rocket science. Share the information to keep players and fans engaged. This should also be done at the end of the seeding bracket so that teams don't have to hang around or call directors to find out when they play. We may be old, but we all have smart phones to stay connected....let's use them!

I know this topic is a source of frustration. Every major tournament this subject comes up. I share the opinion that having scores available at the end of every day is a good thing. I can track friends teams at other facilities, know who my team is playing, etc. It is just plain convenient. I could be wrong (don't think I am, but it's possible) that 60-70% of people playing side with me and believe it's one of the top frustrations.

I think I remember SSUSA looked into quick scores. I am guessing the 3rd guarantee game kicked that out. That would have been nice, but I get that it's probably not easy to implement due to that 3rd guaranteed game or maybe the cost of the solution was prohibitive.

The compromise I am hearing out there is a simple pic or easily filled out pdf that could be posted online from each site at the end of the day. Seems reasonable, but I am sure we will hear why that's not feasible.

Bottom line is it just doesn't seem important enough for SSUSA to fix the problem or come up with some alternative solution since this is a common concern year-after-year. I hear plenty of people wanting it, but nothing gets done, which is weird to me, because I want to believe our (the players) voice does matter to SSUSA as consumers of this great product. There is evidence of that by the fact we have a new ball to play with. Enough people voiced opinions on that and it changed. I can only hope this problem is next to tackle. One can hope!

It has never been a priority with this organization, it has always been you'll get it when we give it to you and that is understood. However when you see a director like Tim McElroy take the time to accomplish what we have been asking for, it is obvious where the problems lie. What is the problem with taking time to TRY to solve an ongoing issue that would keep many involved.

I guess you think it's about knocking this association.
you are wrong sir, it's about making it better!

It took me less than 10 minutes to copy and paste the information.

So the question is simple why don't they just do it.

Nothing more, nothing less.

so stay humble and get with technology, it will make your world much better. get rid of that old flip phone and get a Iphone. LOL

grayhitter59, looks like you may have pasted too well, and I know that you are a proficient poster. This does prove my point on why I would never let some kid or random disinterested party post scores. Bad input is worthless. You know that I don't understand why people think that knowing scores is their right, and I am very involved in technology and softball. I would find the information interesting, but if I want to know badly enough, I would buy a plane ticket or text a friend that is out there. SSUSA has been trying to address the brackets and scores software as Dave has stated before, but their format is different than "regular" associations which makes commercial products useless. Also their volume is way beyond what any other tournament has which also makes it even more complex. The association that you praise has small tournaments; so no wonder they can do it. If they want to impress me, let them buy AEDs and learn how to use them during a tournament. I lost a friend at one of their tournaments. SSUSA has the best overall product which this tournament proves by the number of teams.

Hello Nancy, you and I have never met and normally I don't respond much on this board but your response hit a nerve. Not sure whoever on all these posts ever said it was our right to see scores. We all play in these tournaments and have many friends that play at different age groups and for our own enjoyment like to see how they are doing. As Tim did a great job on his own keeping the tournament he was doing updated and was appreciated as I friend playing in 60 AAA. As you all have stated many times your software can't give us want we would like so can you explain what is so hard at the end of the day for the director to take out his or her phone take a picture and post it, not asking for much more than that as I have seen numerous people ask? Have enjoyed SSUSA so far but as a business man I also look to try to give my customers what they want. I know this might seem silly to the powers to be but it is an issue that I have seen now for 4 years since join. Maybe we will run into each other some day, apologize for my rant if I see you I will introduce myself and buy you a beverage :)

BH44, sorry I did not mean to offend you, but if you look at the mean things said in some of the posts that is where I derived the word right from on my own. It is definitely not my software and have never been asked to come up with a solution but understand the complexities involved. I know that SSUSA has been trying to meet this need, but it is not a standard solution like other scheduling and bracketing software. The format is completely different than potential 2 and done, and young guy tournaments seldom have seeding games. I have helped local parks with their scheduling software in the past because of problems, and their number of teams were no where on this scale. SSUSA does care about their customers. How would you propose that all of these brackets be photographed, collected, and displayed? For this tournament, it would be a massive task; it would not be easy. I know that at the end of a long day at a tournament that the last thing I want to do is one more thing. I guess that I am a little offended myself when people say that all of this is so easy. If they only had a few teams like the other guys, I agree that it would be no big deal. I have coached and directed tournaments. Neither of those jobs are appreciated, and people that are not doing them always think that they are easy. Again, I was not trying to hit a nerve with you. I would definitely look at the scores if they were online, but they are not, and I am ok with that. None of the tournaments where I live and play are ever online. These are just my opinions. I have been involved with softball 31 years. Hopefully we can have a nice conversation on the subject in person some day.

BH44, I was just doing a little research. I am pretty sure that we have met. You probably did not know that it was me though. You were in Indianapolis last year. If you ever get over here again, please make sure to introduce yourself to me. I really am a nice lady who is very passionate about softball, especially senior softball. If you want to talk before then, just let me know.

Nancy, all the post that I have seen from you come with a lot of knowledge and well meanings.

But if you know anything about PDF you should know that anyone can take a PDF, as long as they have access I.E. PDF rewrite and open it and enter data onto document.

So you have a bracket that Dave has already posted on the board, all that is need is to add data. this should happen at the end of the day over an adult beverage or non alcohol their choice.

Why not give your valuable customers what they ask for, how is that not the way to improve your end product. Business 101.

I understand being over loaded with work, FINE! Get help is all I am saying, lots of retired individuals out there that can handle this at a reasonable cost.

How long can this continue to go, without a solution.

Because of some one wanting ultimate control.

Does not make any sense to this softball player (Business Man)

Tim, that's been brought up many times over the years. I don't think this message board allows you to post images. Another option would be the SSUSA Facebook page, I think it started last year and Tim McElroy posts on there once in awhile and Facebook would allow you to post a picture of the bracket. But unfortunately we as members don't have access to post anything on that page.

I have played senior ball since my 40’s. If you are thinking about hiring someone to keep the scores and brackets updated online, I would be more than happy to fill that position. If someone from senior softball would contact me regarding the position, i could go over my qualifications. Updating the brackets and scores online is a great idea for all of the big tournaments,

I was mistaken about posting on the SSUSA Facebook page, we can't post on the main page but we can post on the visitor page. So, if players from this weekend or any future tournament want to post a picture of the bracket from their field, here is my suggestion;
1.) Take a picture of the bracket on your phone
2.) Go to Facebook and search for Senior Softball USA
3.) Select their page from the search results
4.) Select Posts
5.) Select see visitor posts
6.) Enter some text and your bracket picture
7.) Select Publish

Now everyone can see the bracket.
I posted an example bracket I had from the Spring Worlds.
Hope this helps
