Pitchers Mask
What are some pitchers masks that are acceptable and where can I buy them?

The pitchers will have the best advice, but I see a lot of Rip It masks in senior and younger (men's and women's) softball. I would put it in a search engine and look for a good price.

Bixel, coop3636 gives good advice, and he forgot to tell you how good he looks in that mask.

The sports store listed on this site appears to have a few different kinds of masks: http://www.bsnsports.com/seniorsoftball

Thanks for the info Nancy and coop3636.
Are the fielders masks approved for pitchers?

The danger in using one of the infielder type masks for pitching is a pitchers reflex sometimes is to turn his head. If this is done in an infielder mask you can get struck on the side of the head. Just my thoughts.

Bixel, as long as it covers above the eyes and down to the chin (exact wording in pink above), it is acceptable. Marcster13 is very correct which is why pitchers should always back up after the pitch. We had a 21 year old that had been drinking, and he turned his head away and was hit in that soft spot on his head and died instantly. The park made the black ESTs not legal to use in league play way back when. A friend of mine was umpiring the game. It would be hard for me to do a game again after that. I have had 2 that needed CPR, but both survived. Thank God.

i use the champro (same as the ripit) with a catchers/coaches helmet when pitching....the helmet protects my head...its what in would recommend if you like the fielders mask(ripit and such)....another would be the double flap batters helmet with a mask on it like some of the girls do in fastpich...i have seen one guy who attached the catchers throat guard to it....

mad dog, I know that I have heard some pitchers say that a helmet severely restricts their peripheral vision. Can you talk about that? I know that it has to be really hot wearing one sometimes too. I do agree that a helmet better protects the head especially in the situation marcster13 mentioned. I am grateful that SSUSA mandated the mask. Other associations do not. Many pitchers would not wear one without this rule.

nancy yes they can be hot but all helmets are that way...i wear a no flap catchers helmet(old style) turn backwards just like a catcher with my fielders mask...i also wear a skull cap that helps with the sweat......the double ear flap batters helmet i have not tried..but teammate does...he loves it....and yes it is hot also.....the vision for both myself and my teammate are great....the prol i have with the other helmets is that they do block down vision(at your feet and such)....have to really tuck the chin in to field grounders and low line drives.....but to each their own....ya just have to try some on to find the one you like......i did have the worth pitching mask/helmet and didn't like it b/c of vision prols......i also wear the mask when playing the infield......

as a pitcher that has been hit in the face i highly recommend wearing a helmet of some sort. i have no problem with vision in a helmet. id gladly sacrifice a minute amount of side vision for more protection. just remember it only takes one ball to do some serious damage. cover up

Worth does have masks and we have been trying to keep them in stock all summer long. Worth has sold a bunch of them this softball season. They have been around for some time now. They continue to try and improve them and make necessary adjustments to them. Just my .02 One thing for sure, as we keep striding forward in this softball arena I feel it is healthy to wear a mask when pitching. If you feel you need to wear one while playing a position then do so. The balls are coming at you at 100 mph... Good Luck and have fun...
