Otis ... Your team is scheduled for only one "late" game (at 5:30 PM on Wednesday) next week in Phoenix ... That is about the time of official sunset (5:26 PM) ... It will be officially "twilight" until about 6:52 near the end of game time ... The lights at Rose Mofford are very good and will be on early to handle dusk ... The three 5:30 PM games are unavoidable as to time on the schedule ... The 75's, 80's and 85's have the 4:00 PM game slots, and your division has the 2:30 PM slots ...

Thanks for the twilight information. We like the schedule, just some were concerned about seeing the ball.

21, I agree with you. I quit playing at night about 5 years or so ago. One reason was the seeing at night problem. The other is everybody kept getting younger, faster, stronger and better in a 50 and It is hell getting old. Thanks Harry

The Northern California Senior Softball Association is one of the larger associations in the world with around 100 teams and about 1800-2000 players. They officially use SSUSA rules as their rule book, and then they annually post any unique rules for NCSSA or any rules that differ from SSUSA. They have always been a bit more conservative than SSUSA when it comes to safety.

Their rules state that no tournament games may be scheduled to be played under the lights for any team aged 60 or over! This means that no games would be scheduled that would need lights turned on (such as most twilight games) even if only for the later innings. Of course, in actual tournaments, the play may run late due to overtime games, injuries, weather delays, etc. and the teams would play under the lights.

We also have an evening league in our local association of about 300 members, and it is the rare player who can safely play under artificial light after his 50s. Some do, and take the chance (there is no age limitations other than a minimum of 50), but many a player has discovered in his 60s that his vision can rapidly deteriorate even in a year's time.

As a new 65 team we were placed in the AAA division despite having five 70 year olds and five 75+ year olds on the roster... Now it is likely we will have to play a 6:30 pm game (definitely dark by then) in Phoenix on Tuesday. I'm concerned for the safety of our players and was surprised to learn that even 65 teams are scheduled for night games.

We are also a new 65AAA team with a mixture of 65/70 year old men. I appreciate the time and effort SSUSA invests to organize this type of tournament; however we are a little uncomfortable about playing a night.

Happy Veterans Day--God Bless for all who served and for those presently serving.

masked man, you are correct and I have the same problem. It seems the lights are 10 times bigger than they used to be. And at 66 night games are tough unless the lights are VERY good, also.

I turn 75 next week. I had cataract surgery. Wow I can see at night games again.
