SPA bat inspection at their nationals
I just received an information packet from SPA about their Major and Major Plus North American Championoships in Kansas City. Most of it I have heard before. They are stressing that they will adhere to a deadline of June 23rd.
Another change is the bat inspection process. I'll quote: "All bats will be checked prior to your first game by the SPA Umpire in Chiefs and/or Equipment Standard Committee members. Bats will be check thoroughly i.e., weight, balance, tampering of bat, dents, cracks, etc. A specially designed logo will be placed on all approved bats."
I hope they are lenient with respect to bat weights. Very few bat's true weight agrees with the sticker.
Kudos to SPA for trying to control altered and illegal bats!

I like that part about the Sticker. I have asked some ASA umps, like the new Mutants or the 2006 PST's they are so much alike during course of the game how can you tell if I switch bats from the 98 to the 120 or the PST98 to the PSTOC.

An ump would have to be pretty sharp each time you came up to catch the switch.

The way that associations have handled it in the past would be to have an umpire look at the bats, and culling the ones that were dented, cracked or had Knob Cuffs (this example is ASA). All a player had to do was hide his illegal/altered bat until the umpire left.
If SPA uses stickers they should use the type that self distructs when removed to prohibit moving it to another bat.

Why would anyone need to remove the sticker? Don't we get to use the U2 and the Anaconda Combat in SPA? I mean what else do you need? The Combat comes in an EL so if you don't like the balanced U2 use a EL Combat.

I know what you mean. With the U2 and Senior Combat available, why would someone use a shaved or loaded bat?
Why even use a sticker???? Why even inspect bats??????

The associations that need to closely inspect bats and mark them after inspection are ASA, ISSA and ISF.

I agree Bruce but I guess even with those options guys will still try to cheat. I would say it is a shame but the fact is it has been going on in softball and baseball for a very longgggggggggggggggggggg time.
