Winners of 65 Majors -Vegas
Just checking to see results of the 65 major division as we Rezults were knocked out yesterday. The good news is We Rezults broke our streak after 3 tournaments and going 0- 10 and won 1st game we played with wonderful open inning team play. We finished 1 win 4 losses running us to 1 -14 for year but again we gave it our best. Saw some great teams in Major division and they can be very proud of positive spirit and sportsmanship. Fields were great and overall again I can not say enough how proud of our team I was .Thanks to all that came up and spoke to me about life and this wonderful game of softball that at this age we are still blessed to play. You're right GI--we are blessed to still be able to play at this age.

Only one major complaint about this tourney though. Timberworks. Great guys, fabulous team. But why were they in the 65 Major bracket? All the rest of the bracket teams were pretty evenly matched, making for a fun, competitive tourney. But Timberworks is simply too skilled a team to be playing the rest of us. They sent us (NorCal Reds) to the losers bracket early and eliminated several other teams who would have had a chance to advance. In a local tourney, fine, we'll play anyone. But to spend this kind of money to travel and then play a team way out of our league just doesn't seem right to me.

Robo your complaint is right on. To have Timberworks in that tournament was an outrage. Some of us tried to point this out a head of the tournament but were told to stand down and our message was even deleted. You are also right in pointing out that the members of Timberworks are nice guys but the problem is not with them but with Senior Softball. They knew the problem and they knew of solutions but refused to act. There was little doubt as to who was going to win the tournament once Timberworks was in the actual tournament. You were also right on as to how equal the teams were that were at Vegas. It was a shame that teams were eliminated by Timberworks. Let us all who are in Major 65 will not have to endure this again.

To add to the Timberworks issue, they are without a doubt one of the best teams in all of Senior Softball. That said, the team that ended up winning was a Major Plus last year and was moved down in October of 2018. The teams that win a major tournament and get moved up, end up getting killed every time they play Timberworks and eventually get re-rated and move back down. That has happened to R&R twice, all very good teams.

I guess we are all real good at talking about the problem and not focusing on the solution. Senior Softball needs to fix this. As stated before, we all pay big bucks to compete in this tournament and end without a chance to win.

Iím confused. How did Timberworks eliminate teams, when they were in the winners bracket?

I'm sure Timberworks sets their schedule up well in advance like many teams do. When your players purchase non-refundable airline tickets for a specific tourney and then no other teams in your classification show up, you need to play someone. There are many factors to consider when participating with a traveling team, hotel costs, air travel, time off from work, etc. Even if a team is fully sponsored, changing flights and hotel rooms can be quite expensive, especially if you cancel out altogether.

There always can be an alternative, it seems that with 16 teams entered into the SW Championship, 2 sets of awards should be given out. Timberworks could have been awarded the Championship for Major+ with awards by being declared an exhibition team. Then the Major teams could have an outright Champion with awards.

I'm wondering why last years Timberworks was giving 5 runs to other Major+ teams and for this event, the Major team had an option to take 5 runs or 11 defensive players, they should have gotten both. I suggest that SSWC needs to develop a set method and stick by it for each tourney. The Major Plus "super" teams are just playing within the rules they didn't create.

I remember an old saying, "Let's just go and play whoever shows up"

All are valid points Don. Last year Timberworks, and a few other teams across the country, were ranked as Major++ teams. After the winter meetings, there were no teams classified as ďMajor++Ē. Through normal attrition, players age up, move on or quit playing for various reasons. Which gives those teams the ability to pick up new players.

The nucleus of Timberworks are the same group of players. Many of the players are the same Nor Cal guys that have been playing together since the Kellyís Sports & California Thunder 50 Major+ days. The bigger question is, where are all of Major+ teams/players from that era?

The powers to be have nixed the idea of letting Major+ teams play exhibition & then giving them the awards package. Timberworks, has in the past, played as an exhibition team & not been eligible to receive the awards package. Thatís a costly option. Plus, it gives those teams, playing against Major+/higher division teams, no reason to play hard & try to beat the Major+/higher division teams. Virtually giving those teams a bye & certainly not giving the Major+/upper division teams, any type of competition.

I donít know what a viable solution would be! Iím sure that SSUSA is open to any & all suggestions. I do know that our 65 Major team will most likely be facing Major+ teams in upcoming tournaments.
I look forward to the challenge!

As not to lose money on non-refundable plane tickets, hotel rooms and tournament fees. With the major + teams able to roster 4 out of area players,. Do we allow the major teams to roster 2 out of area players? To try and avoid the issue that came up in Vegas this weekend. You allow the major + team to bring their complete roster. When playing the major teams, 2 of their out of area players can not play that game. I think that may level the playing a little bit when it comes to this situation. Just a thought.

We will see how the system works. WE Rezults team are now 1 win and 14 losses Since we restarted in two Rick Siefmans tournaments and last week in Vegas worlds. I am believing it is a no brainer to senior softball that we have tried and failed so far to compete well and I assume will be moved to a lower level. We gave our best and thanks to Senior softball for letting us add a 11th player last week. We lost over half of our team in Sept after winning worlds as players did not want major level. Our coach has done a good job to keep us on the field while short players.I am thankful to play but working in the school system has taught me that if I pit our 6th graders against a 4-5th grade group of students

SD00 is trying to address a key issue with the new Major Plus out of region rule - although it may not be the answer. Unlike an easy 5 run fix and a reduction of HRs in other divisions -- the out of region players in Major Plus is a bigger differentiator.

As to planning...Major Plus teams have faced the same issue over the years. They have usually communicated directly with other Major Plus teams to find out if they were going to a particular tournament. This was done so teams can make plans. (most hotels require a couple days - some maybe a week - to cancel)

In the case of Vegas - the question to ask would be: "was a Florida (or east) team coming?" They certainly have more of an issue with flights. Many in California can drive to Vegas and fairly short Southwest flights can be refunded (used within 1 year) Maybe they said they were coming again - but if they didn't Timberworks knew their options.

Last year they usually played Rebels or R and R. (Old A's have pretty much evolved into 19 Hitmen - Major. Before they had Omen which pretty much evolved into a 70's Major Plus team) A friend of mine played for Rebels and he told me they were NOT going. R and R was reclassified (for the second time to Major) That pretty much leaves Enviro Vac - (bumped to Major Plus) who may go to Reno - but evidently didn't commit to this tourney.

The other option - which many Florida Major Plus teams do is to play down an age group. They seem to do this quite often. Other Major Plus teams have also done this in the past.

Despite all this - it seems like Timberworks wanted to get together and play and dominate 65's again - and SSUSA accommodated them.

Sorry computer kicked me out. I was saying our 4-5th graders will not be able to compete against 6th graders level. I love the game and will continue to play as long as possible. Rezults are 1-14 in past 3 tournaments, I lost a paragraph in computer error or mine HA sorry do not feel like rewriting it. I am sure it will work out.
