Aug. 9, 2019 idahoreb Men's 60 62 posts | Correct call Runner heading to third gets hit on the shoulder with the ball. Ball bounces off the fence hard and strikes the on deck batter and goes out of play. The on deck batter tries to get out of way but has no chance of it missing him. What’s the call. |
Aug. 9, 2019 B.J. 1107 posts | there is no penalty to the base runner.. play on.. unless he did some crazy zig-zags into the path of the thrown ball.. as far as the ball then bouncing into the on deck batter and he is standing in the vicinity of the on deck circle/area I still have no call as per your OP he attempted to get out of the way.. very seldom do I penalize the offense for a defensive players bad throw |
Aug. 9, 2019 grayhitter59 Men's 60 345 posts | once it strike the on deck batter I would call dead ball. |
Aug. 9, 2019 B.J. 1107 posts | grayhitter.. I would have a live ball "IF" he is in the on deck circle... if he is over near the scoring line/plate and is hit near where the catcher is trying to make a play then I could have interference and a dead ball |

Aug. 9, 2019 idahoreb Men's 60 62 posts | More info. The on deck batter was the second on deck batter which we allow. He was in front of the gate opening to the dugout. No defensive player was close to the ball when it went in the dugout and no play could have been made. Where do you place the runner, live ball or dead ball. |
Aug. 9, 2019 B.J. 1107 posts | idahoreb.. once the ball enters the dugout it becomes a dead ball.. if the gate was left open by the "defense" I would just have a dead ball and not allow runners to advance.. if there were no actual gates then read the rule below for different awarded bases depending on whether the OF or IF made the throw and was it the 1st throw or a relay 8.4(10) • WHEN RUNNERS ARE ENTITLED TO ADVANCE Runners are entitled to advance without liability to be put out: E. 1. When the first throw is made by an infielder, two bases shall be awarded. The award shall be governed by the position of each runner at the time the pitch was made; however, if all runners, including the batter-runner, have advanced at least one base when the infielder makes the wild throw, on the first play after a pitch, the award shall be governed by the position of the runners when the wild throw was made. 2. When a throw is made by an outfielder or is the result of any succeeding play or attempted play, the two base award shall be governed by the position of each runner and the last base he has touched at the time the throw was made. If two runners are between the same bases, the award is based on the position of the lead runner. |
Sept. 1, 2019 Wayne 37 Men's 65 773 posts | AFAIK, the is no rule that pertains to a runner doing crazy zig-zags in the OP. The play is behind them and they don't have eyes in the back of their head most likely. The runner establishes his own base path. |
