World Masters Playing at Sunset Park Softball Complex
Played at Sunset Park several times. Fields are not the best, but they are playable. Now Here's the caveat, " Where in the World was the maintenance crew to groom the Infields"! We played there last year, we had all late morning and afternoon games. No problem with game schedules. Major Problem with Field grooming. The fields that we played on were not Groomed put one time,of which I asked around to have the fields groomed for what turned out to be our last game of the Tourney. A couple of player's from one of the Las Vegas Team stepped up and dragged the field. Kudos to them, put they are also playing, why was the burden on them to drag the Infield ?
My understanding is, that LVSSA/SSUSA are partners in putting this #1 Tourney on. I also was told that LVSSA was in charge of making sure that the fields are available and playable, including grooming between games or some kind of scheduled dragging. Be it between all games, (which is preferable) or between every third game, etc. ? By the time we and ALL teams were playing in the late morning/afternoon the fields were atrocious ! Bad hops became commonplace. It was in one word Ridiculous. Especially when you consider the cost and the Importance of the World Masters. If I was given correct information regarding their responsibility on Maintenance of the Fields. Then LVSSA needs to step up and Honor this part of their Commitment.
I can only speak to the infield conditions at Sunset Park. Do not know of issues at the other facilities.
If I am incorrect on who should be held accountable,LVSSA,regarding Dragging the infields, I would like to know who IS the responsible party so as to hold them accountable.
Bottomline this negligence needs to be taken care of.
With Respect,
Tomar

I agree. And I would also like to point out that taking a broom and sweeping the base path is not dragging the field.

Are the outfields at Sunset grass or synthetic?

Sunset are grass. Very decent place to play.

In the past the Sunset fields were very nice but last year the grass outfields were not great, particularly field 11 with bare spots and bad hops. And fields 5 and 6 (near the little league fields) were peppered with gopher holes in the outfield near the fences.

But they are like Dodger Stadium compared to where we'll be playing- the infamous Shadow Rock. Two of the fields are little more than glorified cow pastures. And Hollywood wasn't much better (as of 4/18 at least).

Quit complaining! The Major + teams do not complain about the field conditions at Shadow Rock or Hollywood Park! Oh yeah, they never are assigned there! Arroyo Grande is for the most part their home field during the Worlds!
It is strange that the majority of the 700 teams are MAJOR or less rarely get assigned to the best complex in Vegas!
Have been playing in the Worlds for over 17 years and never have been assigned there. Been assigned to Shadow C'rock' several times. Must be a coincidence!

You're right, biggflyy1953. What was I thinking?

This year I'm grateful to be playing on any fields but it's disappointing to be banished to Area 51. I guess $795 doesn't buy what it used to.

This topic comes up every year bigfly1953. Decisions to place certain divisions at x, y or z location is more about inventory & demand than a desire to cater to a particular division. Some parks (like Arroyo Grande and BLD) don't cancel league play during the week. Having to be off the field by 4:00pm presents a challenge and dictates which divisions do & don't play there.

Sunset Park (6), Shadow Rock (4) and nearby Hollywood (2) are available in the evening and effectively offer SSUSA a couple of 6 field complexes. This results in more games being played at a single location so that teams aren't fighting traffic.

I liked the way the scheduling was done a few years ago. A team would play it's 2 seeding games at one park, then would move to a different park for Bracket play....this way a team doesn't potentially play all it's games at one park (which happened to our team last year, and it was at Shadow Rock). I'm sure it's easier scheduling wise, to put a pod at one park as long as possible, but as a player it makes for a less enjoyable experience. I would guess that the majority of players wouldn't mind traveling between parks, especially if it's one park on Thurs and a different park on Fri, etc... Our team has played the majority of it's games at Shadow Rock, the last two years, and this is not a quality Park for a World's event.

I believe that SSUSA does its very level best to rotate where divisions play. Therefore, if you changed age groups or classifications, you could play at the same park in consecutive years, but not normally.

60 Major has been assigned to Desert Breeze for the past 2 years (18-19). Adequate fields, however, it would have been nice to see a change of scenery. If the change of scenery would have been Shadow Rock and Hollywood, I give kudos to SSUSA staff for not assigning the 60 Majors there. Hate retrieving HR's amongst all the boulders!! Need to hire a goat to go get them!!

Yes they have! ... And they were also a perfect fit last year for the identical number of teams (31) and bracket logic/layout ... Sometimes, as the scheduler for an event of this magnitude, it's nice to catch a lucky break once in a while! ... It doesn't happen often ...
