Was this the correct Call?
Batter/Runner hits fair grounder to third baseman. Fielder attempts throw to 1B but is wide right. Thrown ball strikes runner's bat which he is still holding as he runs to first. Batter/runner is inside runners lane and has not reached the bag when struck. Thrown ball deflects off bat and into foul territory. Batter/runner reaches bag safely. Defensive team objects saying batter/runner should be called out for carrying the bat which was struck by the thrown ball. Umpire disagrees and rules runner is safe. I find nothing in the Rulebook which would prevent runner from being out in this situation. Thoughts?

There is no prohibition in the SSUSA Rulebook for a batter-runner carrying his bat with him as he navigates the bases ... Your fact pattern indicates that circumstance as being the only basis for the defensive team asking the batter-runner to be called out ... On that narrowly defined basis, the umpire's "safe" call is the correct call ... Our ruling, of course, does not cover the multiple "what if's" and "but, but, but!" changes to the scenario that may appear here to tweak the initial circumstances ...

I would agree... if the bat he was carrying was in foul territiory ...

and yes he is allowed to legally carry the bat to any base as long as he does not interfere with a defensive player making a play....

if as you stated the B/R and bat were all in the running lane in foul territory as you described the play and the throw from 3rd was wide right and it carried into the runners bat I would have a safe call also ... BUT...
if the runner's bat was hanging over into fair territory and not in his running lane and the same wide throw were to occur I COULD have an out for INT. if in my judgement it impeded the 1B from making a play

What if the ball went out of play after hitting the bat. Does the B/R get 2nd base?

NPW... yes since the bat would be considered part of the runner and if he and the bat were in foul territory (runners lane) then he would be awarded 2 bases from the time of the pitch

Why does the B/R have to be in the running lane on a normal groundball to F5?

Since it is not against any written rule, what would having the bat over fair territory be different than in foul territory since it is part of the runner?

Time for somebody to go apetit.

B.J. ... Does your answer change if the thrown ball hits the bat, then the batter-runner's head and bounds over the fence in fair territory before hitting the ground and the batter is Jose Canseco (he plays in SSUSA)? ... I just KNEW this was going to be tweaked exercise in "what if???" and "but...but...but!!!" ... Hilarious! ... Oh, and I don't think which hand the batter-runner is holding his bat in matters too much ... [grins]

wayne... you might not need to always ask these questions if you would simply open a rule book and read it...

here let me help you again

8.3 • BATTER-RUNNER IS OUT
D. When he RUNS OUTSIDE THE RUNNING LANE and, in the umpire’s judgment, interferes with the fielder taking the throw at first base; however, he may run outside the three-foot lane to avoid a fielder attempting to field a batted ball.

so if the B/R or his bat is in fair territory I "MIGHT" have INT. as I stated above very CLEARLY ... I also stated for that to happen it would be in my judgement that he impeded the 1B from making a play

by the way you can down load a rule book for free on this site... you ought to try it

Dave... lol I forgot about Jose... he would never get extra bases especially for not being able to hit it out of the infield

I read the rule and as usual it is vague with no interpretation. I asked you the questions to see if you might be able to answer one. The B/R is NOT required to use the running lane as they advance on a grounder to F5. All the have to do is run to orange bag. Interference for being outside the lane is not relevant to this situation.

It is obvious now you don't know what the running lane is for and what consists a running lane violation. I could explain things to you, but it would be a huge waste of time.

Dave, he MIGHT COULD have Conseco out if his huge head is was fair territory.

wayne.. again you use the word VAGUE because of your lack of reading comprehension and knowledge of the rules.. how much clearer can a rule be ..

8.3 • BATTER-RUNNER IS OUT

no where in the rule does it state that the catcher must be making the throw or that the ball must be thrown from a certain part of the field.. it just says that the
RUNNER MUST BE IN THE RUNNERS LANE...

and just so you know the runners lane is the last 30' of the 70' base line

I just KNEW we should have CLOSED THIS THREAD immediately after the second post ... Before it devolved into a silly cat fight over random "what if's" irrelevant to the original inquiry ... What was I thinking, if anything, by not doing so??? ... **THREAD CLOSED**
