Didn't think that an older team like mine would ever play at Golden Eagle again, but shutting down Shadow Mountain as well!! Doesn't look good for Reno.

Would be nice to hear something from SSUSA or the tournament organizers versus members having to speculate. Hopefully that will happen soon! Until then, I am going to plan on playing and prepare for the event as normal!

SSUSA has previously stated that their next announcement regarding the cancellation of tournaments would be on or around May 1st.

For those of you who play NCSSA tournaments, we should be hearing something this week regarding the tournament in Sacramento on May 16 - 17 (the mandatory week 2 notice before automatic cancellation).

The City of Sparks has made the difficult decision to cancel tournaments and special events through at least the month of May. Cancellations include:

May 8th & 9th – Law Enforcement Tournament, Adult Softball-Golden Eagle
May 16th & 17th – No Crying Tournament, Adult Softball – Golden Eagle
May 22nd – 31st – SSUSA Rockin Reno, Senior Softball – Golden Eagle & Shadow Mountain

…..and another one bites the dust.....sorry to hear that !!! I wonder how the comradery will suffer. Our team always (wives included) always goes out to eat as group usually Sat. night. If we can play ball yet not go out and have a good sit down meal in a nice restaurant anywhere that will hurt!

The city of Sparks is not the tournament organizer, they cannot cancel the tournament, SSUSA will be the one to make that call. Sparks has just eliminated their fields as an option for SSUSA to use. Hopefully SSUSA can come up with a plan to utilize the fields in Reno and Carson City that are not yet closed, and get the entire tournament in!

I know a lot of us are ready to go out and play ball. I think instead of starting rumor of this or that happening in a city that a tournament is schedule to be held that we relax a little and wait until SSUSA tell us if a tournament has been cancelled or continued. We a managers as I am a manager of a 65 team am waiting to play just like the rest of you. We have signed up to play in Reno, but I have as well as SSUSA don't have full control of what tournament will continue and which ones is cancelled. SSUSA as well as all must wait. We have no control over this virus and the government. All I say is please be patient with this and don't start rumors as it is hard enjoy for SSUSA to decide as to what to do. It's a lot of work to set up a tournament, yet alone to make adjustments to one if you are limited in a short time frame.

SSUSA: Usually the 60's play on weekends, to accommodate the players who still work. Have you changed your policy on this?

From yesterday's (04/29/20) SSUSA Newsletter sent to all SSUSA members who have not opted out of email communications... Comments below regarding the Rock 'n' Reno event (Nevada) comprise one of 14 such reports for other States and localities ...
__________

ROCK 'N RENO CHALLENGE CUP Reno, NV

SSUSA has received the most questions regarding the Rock 'n Reno Challenge Cup, as the City of Sparks (Golden Eagle and Shadow Mountain) has cancelled all events through the end of May.

SSUSA is planning to re-schedule the Men's 60s through 85s divisions for June 2-4. The Men's 40s through 55s divisions and Women's divisions will depend on field availability on two weekends. SSUSA is hoping to maintain that last weekend in May 29-31 with Reno and Carson City fields, and the first weekend in June 5-7 depending on field availability.

SSUSA will make an announcement once all details are confirmed.

Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak held a press conference today [4/29/20] and said he would announce details on reopening tomorrow, 4/30/20. The reopening of Nevada will also happen in line with the Western State's Pact.

I know that SSUSA is doing everything they can to salvage any part of the Rockin’ Reno tournament - very much appreciated. But scheduling the 60’s for mid-week will put a lot of players (who still work) in a bind, especially those who haven’t been able to work the last 7 weeks. It’s going to split some teams apart.

Too bad this tournament couldn’t be pushed back a month or two.

Real deal, could be right because of 60 yr olds are still working and even some 65 yr olds are working I might be late in agreeing with you but yes, I think this tournament should be moved back a month or two. I know it's all about field availability but If something can be worked out. I know this is last minute and all of the people at SSUSA have been working hard on this tournament, but instead of a pressure to get this tournament done, SSUSA should be right to take it's time to see the whole picture to better make this a great tournament. Just my thoughts.

I thi nk it is easy to say "move it back a month or so", and let's assume the fields are available and easy to secure, with all of the other scheduling gymnastics that happened earlier, when could they schedule this? I think the only option is to have it early June is cancel.

I reserved a room at the Sands sometime ago after they closed. They had to call me back but when they did they gave me a reservation. After receiving the latest SSUSA newsletter I called to change my reservation to the following week since SSUSA hopes to play the 60s - 85s from June 2 -4. No return call so far from the Sands and now the SSUSA website says the Sands is not taking reservations until July 1. Not sure what other hotels/casinos are doing but it appears to me the tournament is going to have to be rescheduled and/or cancelled this year. I agree with Wood_1966.

For those worried about hotels in Reno in early June, there are plenty open - Marriott, Hilton, IHG and others. Possible that the casino hotels will not be open by then, but you’re going to play softball, not gamble.

Although I plan to focus on softball if possible, I would prefer to obtain a heavily discounted casino hotel and just skip the gambling and not overpay for the "luxury" and "resort fees" of the big chain hotels.

With the date change and May 19th is the new final day to register, like most tournaments, field assignments are maybe two weeks out. (How did I do Sacramento?)

When are we going to hear from SSUSA that the dates are firm and a go? Prior to May 19th? According to published reports on airline travel the average number of domestic passengers on flights is 17 per flight and 29 international. SSUSA could bolster those numbers soon.

I know that SSUSA is doing everything they can to keep this tournament alive - thank you! But with the change in dates as well as the uncertainty of the virus restrictions, it probably would be best for all of us if this tournament was cancelled. Too many unknowns at this point...

Based upon the pure science of this COVID-19 why would 60's want to play at the same time as the 65-80's? Based upon the science this makes little sense. btw. Florida Half Century last evening canceled their 60's tournaments for June.

Agree . I would like to see this tournament cancelled and rescheduled for a later date. It still is in the hands of the Nevada governor on when and if they begin phase 1, He also said that casinos would not be included in phase 1.

AMEN Brucesky, AMEN ! In this country with a capitalist style economy people are supposed to 'vote' with their wallet. If not enough participation then the event will be cancelled, plain and simple. If Player 'A' wants to stay home fine, I would no more force them to play than I would want them to force Player "B" not to play. For crying out loud I had to stand 10 people deep in line wearing a stupid mask outside the hardware store yesterday until 10 people left the store so I could get in to buy two ring bolts and 4 washers to fix our wooden yard swing.

I cannot agree with Brucesky more!! If you think it is too soon, then do not come. If you are not comfortable with the precautions in place, do not come. One thing I have learned from watching this comment board is that regardless of what SSUSA does, there are going to be a million people whining and complaining about how poorly they thought it out, how stupid it is, etc...

This is America, you have the freedom to make the choice to attend or not attend, let those that want to make the decision to attend, make that choice!

Yep, you guys are correct. We have a few guys that can't make this tournament because of work (short notice), and a few other guys in the "high risk" category who don't want to risk getting the virus. We're trying to figure out if we have enough guys to commit to this tournament.

A lot of us are tired of being forced to stay at home and want to go enjoy our lives. From my understanding Nevada did not have many cases compared to most states. You can catch covid-19 just as easily at the grocery store.
We can play ball and still take precautions while enjoying our freedom.

Well guy the governor of Nevada didn't state that the parks are closed", but he did say "There must be less than 10 people in a group". So I don't know what SSUSA is going to do, I wish that they would let us know ASAP to make arrangements for Reno. We are ready to play. 2 teams make up 20 people.

Lightning2 you are not being forced to stay home, the state governors are just giving GUIDELINES they are not laws. The problem in my opinion is they are quarantining healthy people! If you are symptomatic then by all means self isolate and if not then don't. Yes I know they have said that asymptomatic people can pass the virus but I have questioned that, never known a virus that infected people and those people not show symptoms. Now they are saying this one does, I simply don't believe them. I wish business owners would open up, restaurants have tables 6ft apart, gym equipment 6ft apart etc. wear a mask don't wear a mask.

I think its very interesting that 66% of new Covid-19 cases in New York are from people who STAYED HOME! How are the CDC and Dr. Fauci going to explain that away?

A standard senior SB field is about 1.3 acres. Ten or eleven defensive players, three base runners, one or two umpires, a batter and on-deck batter, and two base coaches are more spread out than four pickle ball courts with double matches going on. A senior SB game has better SD than any box store/supermarket with people constantly passing others in the aisles.

Tat22 technically you ate correct. I think my point was made though. We cannot go to the gym and work out. We cannot go to the movies. We cannot go bowling. We cannot go to the restaurant for Dining. A lot of us still cannot work. If you do work you may be thrown in jail like the Hair Salon owner. Some counties may have more restrictions then the governor's. Have a nice weekend ! I'm going fishing.

DieselDan, your math is correct and I think the softball field is safer than a box/store supermarket, but there are still problems with social distancing while playing the game. I cannot remember a game when there was not at least one close call at a base which brought forth a groan from one team or the other, particularly at first. In fact, in most games I play, there is a play at first several times in a game, and the first baseman standing on the bag while the runner hits the orange bag is not social distancing.

Also, it is a rare game where there is not at least one forced out call at second or third or just a play where the runner tried to take two bases. Again, I have uncounted times come face to face with the defensive player at second or third when I was trying to come to a stop at the base. And let's not even count the times when opponents, or outfielders, collide and end up on top of one another.

Also, when I am playing, whether on defense or offense, there is a lot of huffing and puffing and deep breathing on the field. This affects the opponent as well, in some case, as teammates.

The distances are great, but the chances for closer than six feet during play, or twelve feet considering the heavy breathing are quite common every game. Desperate to play myself, but it might be too soon.

Omar: I passed very close to a few dozen people today when the Mrs. and I went to the supermarket for about an hour. Maybe those of us who live in the St. G area, like other warm and sunny areas, are fortunate. Have hit 4/5 times a week and gone to the gym often since day one of UT restrictions. Hopefully these training sessions will help me spend less time on the base paths. LOL

There is that! lol The next time I hit a walk-off homer will be the first in a few years. I'm much more likely to come nose to nose with a second baseman or shortstop when I'm trying to stretch a bobbled single!
