"For the athletes, of the eight teams playing on the four fields when St. George News was there, only one team had masks on while in the dugouts and there was limited social distancing while off the field. There was one more team that had masks on them, but the masks were under their chin, leaving their face fully exposed." “The irresponsible actions of one set of parents is not a reflection of USA Preps,” the USA Preps statement said. “We will continue to adhere to our strict safety protocols and put the safety of all attendees and the local community as our number one priority.” https://www.stgeorgeutah.com/news/archive/2020/07/17/rmw-player-in-large-st-george-softball-tournament-tests-positive-for-covid-19-prompting-partial-cancellation/#.XxSCWihKi00 “Now we’re stuck in Utah, we can’t get our money back for the hotels and a lot of out-of-state parents are really upset, I can tell you that,” the parent said. Before the tournament, USA Preps listed guidelines intended to help facilitate social distancing. |
July 19, 2020 Jon44 Men's 55 149 posts | I have been in Saint George over the weekend and drove by fields and saw the actual tournament discussed above. Here are a couple observations: 1) The parking lots and fields were full of complete families and social distancing was almost totally ignored. My opinion is that the number of people that would attend a senior softball tournament is far fewer people (based on my past tournament experiences) and my hope is folks would be more responsible about keeping distancing. 2) It's my understanding that the female athlete came to the games sick, which put everyone at risk. She was quickly found out to be sick and to be safe they shut down that whole division because it was difficult to know who she came in contact with at Gubler park. Lesson here-- stay home if you are sick. I know other divisions at other fields continued to play. The sad thing is it appears the parents knew she was sick, but continued to the tournament because the hotel would not refund their deposit or something like this. Covid 19 is everywhere. Saint George is no exception, but things have not been as bad here as other places where tournaments have been canceled. League nights play here without issue. The heatstroker tournament took place (USSSA, I believe) took place last weekend without issues. I am no doctor, but I am looking forward to playing (as I was in Yuma) this tournament and understand there is a risk that I could get sick. If you are personally worried, the choice is simple. Do NOT come. Stay home and wait it out. If you are not feeling well, do NOT come. |
July 19, 2020 DieselDan Men's 75 600 posts | Young athlete's for decades have attended showcase tournaments/tryouts/camps when they may have been ill or have an injury. Too much pressure to try for that scholarship or maintain a spot on the club team. |

July 19, 2020 sdc 34 posts | Wow two tests two different results. But what do I know I am not a doctor.St George will be our first tourney after five cancellations. I want to play but I will see for myself how safe it is. If it looks like guidelines. are being followed and enforced then I continue if not then it is like you say stay home pretty simple. As far as this story it is not a rumor it happened as far as I can tell..I am glad the player is ok. Like I have stated we lost a nephew to this virus would'nt wish on anybody stay safe |
