What's the correct rule and call
Batter in the box, ball is pitched, batter hears "NO" from behind him but does not swing, thinking its coming from the ump, ball hits strike zone. The NO comes from the catcher not the ump. Is this catcher interference? is this no pitch? called ball for interference? or strike?
Is this a written rule, or sportsman call ?

DB.. this could be considered a form of verbal interference but I would initially have a strike call on the pitch unless the batter complained and then I would call time give the catcher and manager a warning and change the pitch call to a ball..

BJ is correct per definitions 1.45 and 1.48 both interference and obstruction can be in verbal form to distract and/or confuse the other team. His application seems reasonable especially the stern warning to catcher and manager. Definitely would not penalize the batter with a called strike when he is clearly distracted from behind. Maybe after explanations to everyone, maybe even a no pitch. Either way the umpire shows he is in control of the game and knows the rule book.

B.J., I agree. Of course with me it is a little different. In a couple of situations, never that one, I have heard someone complain that I called something. My best story is "foul ball". I won't go into it all, but it was 3B that said it. The coach was furious and told me that I called it; I was clearly pointing fair because an infielder touched it in fair territory. It is sad when you have to explain to a coach that my voice is clearly not a man's.

Nancy, just a couple months ago I had a similar event happen at a local tournament... batter hit a shot down the 1B line and the 1Bman yells foul ball as I'm pointing fair.. I called out time and awarded bases to the offense giving the batter 2B and the runner that was on 1st I scored him because there were 2 outs at the time... The defenses Mgr. wasn't to happy and said that the B/R who he knew very well hadn't seen 2B in years...lol (he was a big slowww guy) I told him well he's got 2B now and you can thank your 1Bman for it..

B.J., at least you don't sound like a girl. Let me guess; he took a courtesy runner from 2B.
