July 8 Larry S 61 posts | I have read & reread the rule. If the defender touches the orange bag first, then drags his foot across the white bag, is the runner safe? There is no runner interference. |
July 8 Dbax Men's 65 2117 posts | Why would the runner be safe if he does not beat the defender to the base? Out. |
July 8 4040club Men's 75 33 posts | Isn't there a safety rule where the defender must touch the white not the orange and the batter/runner must touch the orange ?? |
July 8 B.J. 1126 posts | larrys.. dbax is correct.. there is no penalty for a defensive player touching the orange/safety bag first and then touching the white bag.. runner is out .. 4040club no such rule 8.4(1) • BATTER-RUNNER REACHING FIRST BASE Each batter must reach first base without the aid of a courtesy runner. A double bag shall be used at first base, the double portion of the bag being in foul territory abutting first base. If there is a play on a batter-runner going to first base, the batter-runner must touch some portion of the double bag extending into foul territory. He will be called out if he fails to do so, except if, in the umpire's judgment, the batter-runner is avoiding a collision. The batter-runner simultaneously touching both portions of the double bag is permitted. This is NOT an appeal play. Important: The defending player has only the white base, in fair territory, to make the putout; his touch of only the bag in foul territory will not result in an out. Once the batter-runner reaches first base, the double base shall be treated as one base and the fielder or runner may use either portion. |
July 9 4040club Men's 75 33 posts | Conversely, What if the batter/runner touches the white bag first and then drags his foot across the orange base ?? Safe? if he beats the throw. |
July 9 DaveDowell Men's 70 4432 posts | 4040 ... The only "timing issue" is whether or not the batter-runner beats the throw by touching (some portion of) the orange bag [he's SAFE] before the defender is in possession of the ball and has touched (some portion of) the white bag [or he's OUT] ... Most of these close plays at first don't have enough time to allow a tap-dance component fact pattern where each guy is alternating tapping each half of the safety base ... |
July 29 4040club Men's 75 33 posts | Umpires and rule 8.4(1) Rule states "the batter-runner must touch SOME PORTION of the double bag extending into foul territory". Umpires at Eastern Nationals stated at the beginning of each game that if the batter-runner touches any part of the white bag they are out. I referenced the rule but they would not check. As it turned out we had one play at 1st where the runner touched half orange half white. He beat the throw but the ump called him out for touching the white bag. Does this rule change for certain tourneys or umpire association?? Otherwise, our team had no problem with the running of the tourney. |
July 29 DaveDowell Men's 70 4432 posts | 4040Club ... I am one of the Directors at the Eastern National's and I will re-educate the umpires on this point tomorrow ... THERE IS NO PENALTY FOR TOUCHING THE WHITE BAG so long as the Batter-Runner touches SOME PORTION OF THE ORANGE BAG ... I'm not sure where this happened, would you be so kind as to let me know ... In summary, every time I hear an umpire say "Batter is out for touching the white bag", I know there is a call about to be overturned ... Me: "Batter-runner is safe" ... |
Aug. 5 4040club Men's 75 33 posts | Thanks Dave, this was specified by the umps before our games in the 80s division. "Batter/runners touching any portion of the white base on a play at 1st will be called out." |
Aug. 20 LeeM Men's 70 40 posts | Fielder caught thrown ball, throw pulled 1b off bag. He then touched orange bag and then white before runner/batter reached either bag. Ump called runner safe and in his words " if fielder touches orange bag 1st, ball is dead and runner is safe. Is this correct ? |
Aug. 20 DaveDowell Men's 70 4432 posts | NO, that is not correct ... The defender touching the orange bag first has no effect on the play you describe ... He must touch the white bag to get the out, but nothing in the rule calls for a dead ball and automatic "safe" call if he touches the orange bag ... Here's the applicable portion of the rule ... "..The defending player has only the white base, in fair territory, to make the putout; his touch of only the bag in foul territory will not result in an out.." It's unfortunate the your umpire "made it up on the fly" ... Bad call ... |
Aug. 20 B.J. 1126 posts | LeeM .. I've heard of that rule in local league play..but as DD said it's not a SSUSA rule.. if it was a local league make sure they did not tweak the rule |
