Is there any pitch other than 90 degree or straight up and down legal, such as about 18 inches off hip? Could I have searched for this answer on this site and how? Thanks
rt - on the tool bar on home page, click on "tournaments", click on "rules", Section 6 pages 34-39 cover pitching regulations for SSUSA. Should be applicable in almost all Sr Associations.
Thank's, I actually had found the rule book pitch underhand.Webster's underhand "below shoulder" trying to clarify that hand and ball can be about 2' from hip. Thank's
rtaven.. having the ball away from the hip is ok as long as the pitch is delivered in an UNDERHANDED motion and not side arm, on the first forward pass of the pitching arm past the hip ...this would be umpire judgment on if the pitch was legal
So anything below 90 degrees should be considered legal?
I didn’t say that.. think of it as the face of a “old” clock.. if it was a R handed pitcher I would allow the release to be just a little past the 5 … and again this is left up to umpire judgment and just as in MLB all umpires strike zone and illegal pitch calls are different

If I'm umpiring and the pitcher releases the ball at an 89 degree angle, I'm declaring the pitch illegal. I might do the same at 76 degrees, 58 degrees or 45 degrees. I can't tell you at exactly which point I'll deem the pitch "legal" but we're using my judgment when it comes to UNDERHAND. What yesterday's umpire or last week's umpire judged to be legal doesn't apply in the current game.
Tim .. now you went and gave DD a bigger head than he already has.. lol
