In my league game today the following play happened.
Runner was running home from third. Throw came in to the plate and went wide. The catcher in pursuing the ball fell down in front of the runner. The runner to avoid the catcher ran to home plate, not the outside plate. The umpire ruled him out.
The argument was it was obstruction and the runner should have been awarded home.
Right call?
Wow, this is going to be a fun thread. Senior softball has always opted for the safety factor when making rules. The scoring line is one of those rules to prevent runner-catcher collisions, and the rule that you cannot cross the batters box was adopted in the same vein-too close to the plate and the catcher. In this one the catcher apparently chased the ball into the area the runner was supposed to be in. I would really have to see the play, but if the runner had no choice but to cross the batters box to avoid the collision, I would think he would be safe. However, you said he ran to the plate itself. So actually does your league require touching the other plate instead of crossing a line to score? Where should the runner have gone? Therein lies the grey area. Like I said, this will be fun.
