Discussion: Question about a rule
If a game goes to extra innings the international rule goes into effect where the last batted out goes to 2B to start the inning. The player in question was injured and couldn't run the batting team tried to use a substitution but were told no. I know you can't get a pinch runner but why would the player not be allowed to be removed due to substitution?
the player can be removed but he will be declared out and the runner at 2nd will be the previous batter of the last batter ... the reason for no subs in that case is because if he was a slow runner he would ALWAYS seem to be injured
In extra innings if the proper runner cannot start the inning at second base due to injury he cannot get a substitute or courtesy runner. If he is unable to run due to injury it’s an out and the previous batter starts at second base.
I understand the rule. What I do t understand is why we don’t allow courtesy runners following the same rules we use any other time throughout the game. My thought process is this —- the reason we put a runner on 2nd is to increase the likelihood of the team to score and hopefully limit the number of extra innings that need to be played. If the goal is to have the player on second score why not allow the team to place the runner of their choice that gives them the best chance of scoring? This would eliminate the situation outlined in the initial email in this string.
