Discussion: Winter "Worlds"

What can we do to make the Winter "Worlds" appealing to teams outside the East Coast? It appears 100% of the teams are East Coast teams. Isn't this a World tourney?
DJ12 ... There are NO Eastern teams in the Winter Worlds's this year ... The event is in Phoenix, AZ, so we don't expect to attract Eastern teams ... However, a week before the Winter World's, we run the Winter National's in Ft. Myers and Naples, FL ... That event has 100% Eastern teams this year ... That is also as we would expect ...
It is actually a fairly simple explanation. Most players have a general idea on what they are going to spend going to a tourney. In my opinion, most tourneys held 300+ miles from your home will cost you approximately between 300 and 700 per person. Plus wear and tear on your body if you try and save money and drive. 6-10 hrs both ways. Don't forget a larger number of players are working past 65.

We vote on every tourney we play. We take into consideration the historical number of teams attending, cost per player, and of course our overall health.

Overall the cost of attending a tourney has risen every year regardless of the governing party. We are blessed in being an Arizona based team, which gives us opportunity to play year round. My personal research when trying to go to tournaments east of Ms or over 500 miles, my personal costs would have been in excess of $750.

Probably the only reasonable suggestion, would be rebranding and change the tournament names. Winter Nationals East and West would be more of an accurate statement of fact.

I'm sorry, Dave. I forgot I needed to be exact on this board. I was referring to the Florida tourney.
softball4b.... I would agree the cost of travel anymore is a contributing factor. And I also understand it is a business for many folks, but why not cut back on the number of tournaments so you have more teams at each tourney? Just my .02/
No worries DJ12 ... You don't have to be exact here ... But we do try to respond to the exact questions/comments that are posted ...
Quit having so many Associations scheduling tournaments on the same weekends. EVERY tourny now is a "RING TOURNAMENT". Rings are nothing more than Participation trophies anymore. Keep the COST DOWN and MORETEAMS can afford to play. CUT DOWN to 2 days for Divisions with only 3 or 4 teams in them. In short REDUCE COSTS.
softball4b,
Mike, Even those of us that live in Az still spend $300.00 plus food. Wear and tear on the body just gets more expensive every year.
I live in Prescott and play PSS as do you (not the same level)
its the price we pay for being Elite Athletes :0). I'm playing in Phoenix but probably won't travel to more than 3-4 Tourneys in 2025 due to cost and travel time.

Each year, there seems to be confusion about these two tournaments sometimes resulting in incorrect bookings and/or dates. Suggest that the name of the tournaments be changed to “Eastern Winter National Championships” and “Western Winter World (or National) Championships.” This would be the same as the title of the East and West Nationals in July.
For over two decades, since 2003, the Eastern regional majors in the Winter and Spring in Florida have been called the "National's" and the Western regional majors at the same times in Nevada and Arizona have been called the "World's" ... They've been titled that way for 23 event-years, which is long enough to make the case for title continuity ... We respect your suggestion, but it's unlikely they'll be re-branded at this time ...

With all the possible name variations possible (i.e. Regional. Sectional, Invitational, Divisional, Memorial, and on and on) it would pay special tribute to have only ONE "WORLD" label/moniker. Just my thought....
"EXACTY"

What happened to using "AZ ATHLETIC GROUNDS"formerly known as "LEGACY SPORTS COMPLEX" mesa Az?????
I have a feeling not many teams play in this tournament because " Worlds " is in the name. We go every year because its our last tournament of the year and the weather in Phoenix in November is great. They could call it anything and we would still go.

I do agree tho, the term " Worlds " is way over used.

I believe that there are no adult softball being played there anymore.
DJ12, someone may have already answered this question, but the only way to get non-east coast teams to come to Florida is to not have tournament scheduled a week after in Arizona. There is zero incentive for a team west of the Mississippi to travel to Florida if there is a tournament a week that is easier for us to get to.

Oh Mike, you are so wise!! Dave I'v always liked the branding, and when you add in Eastern and Western National Championships playing each other in the USA National Championships, it really adds to the start of the World tournament. My team won that before we won a Worlds and it was a great feeling of accomplishment for our team who took 2nd in Worlds I think 6 times..the Washington Generals of SSUSA lol.
