Bases loaded no outs 5th run on third.
Batter hits a line drive for a hit. 5th run crosses the scoring line
runner on 2nd advances to 3rd base. Runner on 1st goes 1/2 way to 2nd then turns around (never touches 2nd) batter touches 1st base.
what would the call be? Is there a penalty for this play?
As long as enough runners advance to the next base before 3 outs, the run counts and the inning is over. If there were 2 outs when this happened and one of the runners did not advance and touch the next base, they would be out and the run would not count, as long as it was appealed by the defensive team.
we had something similar happen in a tourny. we were in the field.
runner on 2nd didn't touch third base ( i think it was a walk rather than a hit)
umpire watched him the whole way
he just wanted past 3rd base to the dugout
umpire called dead ball. the runner who missed 3rd was called out. all base runners returned to previous base, the runner who was on 3rd did not score.
i think that ended the inning as the 3rd out.
So, Is there a rule in the book I can't find it.
GMCinCOS.. that was an incorrect call by the umpire.. he should never have made the call unless it was appealed by the defense.. if not appealed the runner is assumed to have touched the base
5.7 • SCORING OF RUNS
A. One run shall be scored each time a runner crosses the scoring line or touches the scoring plate, after legally touching all bases in proper order.
B. No run shall be scored if the third out of the half-inning is the result of:
1.A batter-runner being called out prior to reaching first base or any other runner forced out due to the batter becoming a batter-runner.
2. A runner being put out by a tag or live ball appeal play prior to the lead runner crossing the scoring line or touching the scoring plate.
3. A preceding runner is declared out on appeal involving a force play.
BJ - interesting that the rule calls it an appeal play. To add a little more detail, i was walking in from LC. I watched the guy on 2nd walk towards 3rd. I could tell he was veering off so i looked at the home plate umpire and he was looking right at the runner. i'd say the runner was past the coaches box, very close to the dugout when the ump put up his hands and made the call. I can't say whether someone on my team said something to the ump which might have constituted an appeal.
i can tell you the other team was not happy. It took 5+ minutes to get everyone settled down and get on with the game.
GMC.. it’s not always an appeal play .. if this was the batter/runner advancing to first base and since the fifth run scored, he didn’t go all the way to 1B and entered the dugout.. upon entering the dugout. the umpire should call him out and all runners would return to the base they were on before the hit
In the stated scenario it’s a force out if the umpire is paying attention. Team in the field should notify the ump
No run
stick - initial scenario is "Bases loaded no outs 5th run on third." I believe GMCinCOS is stating his was also the same scenario? If that is the case, for me, as soon as runner on 3B "scores" I look at the other 2 baserunners touching and BR going to 1B. As long as 2 touch a base, the 3rd one can get called out but doesn't matter as it was the only out of the inning. I believe the same could be said if 2 players don't touch as then there would only be 2 outs unless as BJ states the BR does not touch 1B. The real drama starts when there are 2 outs (IMO).
Thanks for the input,
So, the 5th run scores runner going to 2nd base is out inning over with 1 out.
Mck71 you are correct, my mistake. I overlooked where it said no outs.
Had the same situation at the smokies earlier this week. Bases loaded, no outs, fifth run at third. Batter got a base hit to right center. Team was yelling “touch the base touch the base” Right center threw the ball in to me so I stepped on second as the runner from first turned to go to his dugout before getting to second. That would actually be a force out at second. But the 5th run scored so it didn’t much matter.
